Worth the cost

"But the king replied to Araunah, 'No, I insist on buying it, for I will not present burnt offerings to The Lord my God that have cost me nothing.' So David paid him fifty pieces of silver for the threshing floor and the oxen. David built an altar there to The Lord and sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings. And The Lord answered his prayer for the land, and the plague on Israel was stopped." —2 Samuel 24:24-25 In the last chapter of 2 Samuel, The Lord was angry towards Israel and lets David take a census of Israel and Judah. They suffer a plague which lasted for three days and 70,000 died as a result of it. As the death angel was about to destroy Jerusalem, The Lord stops the angel. Then David intercedes and asks the Lord to spare the people of Israel and Judah. This all took place by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite (v.16). David asks to buy the threshing floor and oxen to sacrifice and build an altar to God, even though Araunah wants to give them freely. But David knew the cost and paid for them regardless. Things you pay for affect you because you choose to put your resources and finances toward that cause. You're investing in something that can affect you—whether for good or bad. The same thing applies to our sacrifices to God. Do you give offerings and sacrifices nonchalantly, not giving it any thought? Or do you know the cost and truly give offerings and sacrifices to God intentionally—and invest in Him and His Kingdom? Know the cost, take up your cross, and follow Him.
