Montsoriu is a Medieval castle in Comarques Gironines (Catalonia), built between the 11th and 14th centuries. It was home of the Cabrera family, one of the most powerful families in Medieval Catalonia. Around the year 1360, while most lords didn't have more than 2,000 families under their dominion, the Cabrera had 4,071 families (historians have calculated that it would be about 20,455 people).

There are many legends about this castle. Maybe because of its lords' power, some of these legends are related to witches who create bad fortune for the peasants, spreading their evil magic from the castle to all the fields of their lands, causing bad harvest and poverty for the farmers.

However, among the legends that blame ill fortune on the Montsoriu witch Na Guilleuma and her white-clothed servants, there's also a compassionate one.

It is believed that, once, a very poor woman went to the castle to meet the witch. This should not surprise us, because the Montsoriu Castle is next to one of the places where legends say we can find the Queens of Snakes (a Catalan legend about magical snakes that hold a precious stone inside their mouth. They only leave their precious stones for a short moment when they drink water. If someone stole the stones in that brief moment, the magical stones would grant them happiness and riches for all their life). But, unlike many who have tried, this woman didn't go to steal the snakes' stones. Instead, she explained her situation to the witch, hoping that the witch would help her with her knowledge and means. The witch felt compassion for this poor woman and gave her sacks full of broad beans. The poor woman thanked her and took them home, but when she opened the sacks again at home, the beans had turned into pieces of silver and gold.
