The alarms. That incessant whirring, god, what an awful sound. It gnawed at her thoughts, the proverbial toll of a death knell, replacing her usual level-headed cool with real proper fear, anger, pain. This wasn't the field. They hadn't willingly gone out to meet an alien threat with a clear line of sight on its approach. The enemy had come to their door instead. Worse, it had done so without warning. Diligent to the end, the agents posted at the front entrance had given their lives to get the message to her, and while those precious few minutes couldn't stop the ensuing slaughter, there was no doubt that without their sacrifice, many many more would have fallen instead. But she had no time to dwell on that now. Not when every second counted. Her hand seemed to move off its own accord, like a trance, switching her earpiece back on. A gentle click! issued from the device, followed by her voice over the speakers.
❝ Attention all UNIT personnel, this is your commander in chief speaking! This building is currently under attack from an unknown external threat, I repeat, we are under attack. I am now initiating emergency protocol 17. You are all to follow this order to the absolute. ❞ A secondary click! and the microphone was muted. Kate paused to expel a breath she had been holding and perhaps, an unsaid message ....Good luck and godspeed.
Her firearm extracted, Kate was already halfway to the door when it swung open wildly, careening back against its hinges with an almighty screech! On instinct, she raised the gun. But no sooner had she done so, she found herself lowering the weapon once more as her eyes settled upon another familiar pair. The look on Edward's face could've chilled her to the bone, if she wasn't already. . ❝ What. What is it? Edward, tell me!? ❞
