TBH this whole thing highlights why Vaan and Penelo are so important to the cast. They’re civilians, the ones who bear the brunt of all the high and mighty philosophy chess games that the nobles engage in. The counterpoint to “history will vindicate us” in being “hey dickbag your grand crusade destroyed my family fuck history”

they’re the characters who keep the conflict grounded and put a human face on all these grandiose ideas about freedom and shit

that’s why i kinda look askance at people who trash them and say they were unnecessary because yeah, they may not have the same level of plot relevance (and I wish penelo specifically could have had some more) but they’re still important in terms of the themes of the story
