Well, they see the “objectivist” in your username and think that you would agree with their viewpoints no matter how dumb/think they’re in good company (in response to your tags in the previous post).
[Referring Post]
That must be it, even though most of these people are clearly nowhere close to Objectivist. I think a lot of people round Objectivists off to a special sort of right-libertarian, which they in-turn round off to a special sort of Republican. “Oh, Objectivists just have some particular priorities; no, I’m sure the people who talk about the importance of objective law wouldn’t have a problem with a bunch of hooligans smashing their way through the Capitol because the former host of The Celebrity Apprentice refuses to admit he lost an election.”
Of course, I get plenty of the same sort of people following my space blog, too, so there’s clearly affect cluster effects at play here. Maybe I should do a pinned post with a bunch of views to turn off the lunatics of all stripes. (In this house we support carbon pricing and recognize Pete won Iowa.) I’d change my URL but unless someone has a good script to replace all the broken hyperlinks I wouldn’t want to make such a mess.
Re: concerning that one post about immigration and the “Shirley Exception”, would you think that is also motivated by conservatives believing/insisting that the current immigration system works? Because whenever someone bring up legitimate issues with the immigration system, I noticed that some conservatives would point to pictures of successful immigrants as “proof” that the system is perfect.
(source for the concept of the Shirley exception)
yep, pretty much. it’s a running thing today, but conservatives tend to think people should get what they deserve
if you want to come to The Greatest Country On Earth (TM), obviously you should have to jump through a million hoops to do so
and if there are people who can do it, clearly they deserved to do so; anyone who couldn’t legally immigrate deserves to have to stay in their home country, because they aren’t worthy
*throws 🌹 in your general direction*
And he felt his shoulders shaking and his cheeks streaming with tears and his legs giving out as he fell to his knees, and then he felt a cold hand cradling the back of his head and pulling his face into a beatific embrace, and endlessly through his mind the words rang clear, thank God, thank God, thank God, thank God.
for every “🌹” received in my inbox i’ll post one random sentence of a random WIP i’m currently writing
Ren, for the 10 facts ask.
11. they cannot for the life of them sing; they’re completely tone deaf tbh
12. they’re a little bit afraid of flying and prefer staying on the ground (though generally if Ellis or someone strong is in the air with them they are ok)
13. they don’t have very much stamina
14. they are an empath
15. they love stargazing and astronomy
16. they kinda miss their home on the mainland and wonder if their parents are ok
17. they have a crush on Ellis

It’s basically the epitome of “good in theory, but terrible in execution”.
yeah, it sounds frigging sick to have a country where everyone helps each other and there isn’t any poverty or wealth divides and everyone works to do what needs to be done and has what they need to survive!
...but even under that tier, you do know you would be working, right? there is a lot of mundane work to be done that has to happen, including very gritty jobs. without pay, who is volunteering to work in sewage, or dangerous construction? how come some people get to be artists, and others have to support them with back breaking work? communism is not supposed to have any tiers, but who ensures food is actually distributed fairly? and does the person who is checking against corruption not have ultimate power?
and of course, notably, communist regimes IRL have always included a lot of manual labor. so you wouldn’t just be skateboarding around with free food, internet, getting to draw all day. you’d probably have to work a job you hated for no benefits, only to get rationed food (there has to be a limit in place so no one can hoard). and you can never get anywhere or achieve anything!
but it does sound nice
and the bigger point is, yes, whenever people have tried to pull it off (like 16 times in countries of variable condition and size), it has gone badly. It either isn’t legit communism (china) or turns into straight up horribly deadly horribly oppressive dictatorship (russia). lotta starvation
thanks
