When you get commandeered as a bed.
And back at Leah’s little, with bare faces and tousled hair, decked out in pyjamas, this loving did not cease.
As Archie sleepily shuffled across the room to put on a movie for them, a spurt of confidence shot through Leah’s core. She grabbed him by the waist and with one swift twirl, plunged him into possibly one of the most passionate kisses they had ever shared.
Despite neither of them having a clue what had possessed Leah to do this, they more than gladly savoured every second of the kiss. Honey, marshmallows, raging, innocent desire. They practically had to prise themselves away.
“Well that was...unexpected,” Archie said. Although he seemed too flustered to even be attempting to speak.
“Sorry,” Leah chuckled sheepishly as blood rushed to her cheeks and bouncing, golden curls hurried to shield her from further embarrassment. “I just-”
“No no, I’m not complaining,” Archie blurted. “I’m certainly not complaining. It just sort of...took me by surprise. But you know what I always say.”
“And what’s that?” Leah asked. But her impish grin gave away that she already knew the answer.
“I love surprises.”
Cotton candy skies. Softly glowing street lamps. A hushed breeze. Whispering grasses. Blushing flowers. Wooden benches ingrained with memories of people long gone, of blissful beach days. And right above it, a new memory was being made. A memory of belief, of dedication, of unconditional, puppy love.
“I love you, Arch.”
“I love you too.”

A snapshot. A moment captured in pixels and lens tricks. Lighting, composition, colour-balance all working in harmony to create an artwork too close to reality to fit on a canvas.
Photography was never an aspect of art that Archie had been particularly interested in until his classes in college. But everything changed the second he picked up his allocated camera. His hands caressed its curves with ease, everything felt so natural so quickly. He’d poured over the instruction manual that evening and had scrolled through as many photography blogs as he could find. Now he couldn’t imagine his life without it...
“You mind if I go ahead and take some photos for my project, Lee?”
“No, of course not. I’m fine here fishing; I want to try to get into it more. Try new things, you know?”
“Yeah, that sounds great. You’re as natural with animals as you are with your plants, so I’m sure they’ll be flocking to you in no time,” Archie chuckled. “And don’t worry, I won’t go far, I just want to get shots in a few different areas. The scenery’s just so beautiful here, it’s perfect.”
“Archie, if you’re taking a picture of me as you say that you’re sleeping on the couch tonight,” Leah giggled, bashfully adjusting her line.
“It’s fine, I think your little window seat’s comfy anyway.”
“I’m so glad you’re here for the weekend, Arch,” Leah said quietly. A shy smile lingered at her lips, even after pressing them to Archie’s. The flyaway curls from her bunches tickled his face, drawing out one of the chuckles she loved so much and causing his grin to soften even further.
Their mutual adoration, built up with years of kisses splattered with sunlight, secrets whispered between blankets and cuddles spied on by a night sky full of stars, was clear for anyone to see...so what did Leah have to doubt?
“You...you know that, right?”
“Of course I do.” Archie laid his hand on top of hers, speaking gently, rubbing small circles on the back of her hand as if it could rub the worry right out of existence. “I’m just as glad to get the time away from college,” he added as his voice slid into a jovial tone, hoping to dispel her nerves and bring her gorgeous smile back again.
“Are you sure college is going alright? It’s not stressing you out, is it?”
“Well it’s college, Lee. It’s not exactly going to be a walk in the park. But yeah, it’s good, just hard. I’ve always liked a challenge though, and this is like the best kind. I’m getting to do what I love, just like a more intense version of it. But hey, if it was easy I wouldn’t be able to improve, would I?”
“You sure?” Leah asked. That same concern didn’t seem to want to leave her alone. It buzzed around her head persistently, no matter how much Archie tried to bat it away with a reassuring tone and a gentle smile.
“Absolutely.”
“...Good,” Leah sighed, finally allowing herself to relax again. And with that came her bubbly little giggle and utterly enamoured gaze. “I can’t have my favourite guy getting all tense on me.”
“Well, I mean, one of your signature massages certainly wouldn’t go amiss right about now,” Archie said with a playfully pleading expression. As much as he really wanted the backrub, it was more of an attempt to further distract Leah, which she happily followed along with, even though Archie was sure she hadn’t caught on herself. That being said though, as long as she was smiling, whether she knew or not didn’t matter.
Leah: “So, how are things at college? Have you art classes been going okay?”
Archie: “Yeah, they've been great.”
Leah: “Your grades still doing amazing?”
Archie: “Well not amazing, but they’re pretty good I suppose.”
Leah: “You’re too modest, Archie. I’ve seen your drawings and photos, they’re incredible! I could never do anything like that!”
Archie: (chuckles) “You don’t need to, you’re more than fine sticking to your little vegetable patch, especially when you’ve got a thumb as green as yours. I swear you’re part plant sometimes.”
Leah: (giggles) “So do I. But seriously, Arch, is everything alright? Are your parents feeling better about it now?”
Archie: “Well I think they‘ll start to relax a little more once they see my grades. They’re just worried about the future, I guess. I can’t really blame them though; it’s scary to think about it.”
Leah: “Well don’t think about it then, just concentrate on what’s going on right now! We’re sat on this couch, in our favourite coffee shop, what’s so scary about that?”
Archie: (chuckles) “Nothing.”
Leah: “Exactly! See? Things are only scary if you let them be! And besides, everything will be fine as long as we have each other at our sides.”
Archie: “I hope that’s as true as you make it sound.”
Their greeting consisted of a kiss, fresh like crisp apples but sweet as honey. Warmth rippled through them, filling them like a heaped serving of apple pie. Vanilla ice cream melted on top, but so did Leah under Archie’s touch. A drip slid down the side, Archie’s hand mimicked its movement. Pure decadent, domestic bliss.
“You manage to take any good pictures?” Leah asked.
“Yeah, I think I actually got some nice shots. You catch yourself a fish?”
“No.” Leah’s smile dropped from a face as a sigh dropped from her lips. Her disappointment was clear, but not for the reason expected. “I guess...I guess it’s not for me then. I’ll just have to stick with my gardening, it’s what I’m good at.”
“You’re giving up already?”
“Well-”
“You’ve only just started learning, Lee. You’re just getting the hang of it, don’t lose your confidence before you’ve even built any up,” Archie said with an encouraging smile.
“But what if it’s just like all the other things, and I really can’t do it?”
“Stop letting other people’s stupid opinions tell you what you can and can’t do. Forget what all those idiots in high school said. You rule your own life now, Leah. You can do anything you set your mind to...And besides, it is only catching a fish,” Archie added with a chuckle.
“You think?” Leah giggled, coyly looking up at Archie through her eyelashes.
“I know, Love.”
