Chapter 3 and 4 of Phantom Railway have been released!
The lantern alone was greater than anything Luke had ever seen as it hung above them.
The dread outweighed the awe.
The light of the lantern blinded the wheat.
Next to the lantern’s flame, the light seemed black.

CHAPTER 4 OF LULLABY FOR AN ANCHOR

Hershel did not know how many days he lay there in the bottom of the lifeboat. He did not even know if he’d lain there for any more than a single one. If he had, he thought that perhaps he’d been unconscious. He did not remember falling asleep.
He stared up at the milky blue sky as the sun rose with the boat’s bow. Water clapped softly against the hull beneath them, giving Hershel a quick shove to keep him awake every second or so. The motion did nothing to alleviate his sickness, which seemed to slosh just behind the movements, catching up with him to convert the waves into nausea.

Hershel gets into his first real altercation with the lion.

First chapter is finally up! Or rather, the prologue.
I'm hoping it's at least a little enjoyable! I plan to really set things in motion in the following chapter and set the basis. I'm very new to this sort of thing, but hopefully it's good.
The train (the chapter) has left (has been written) the station (and published), and hopefully it stays on the tracks.
Introducing, Professor Layton and the Phantom Railway.
This is an Alternate Universe set in a 1930s-esque environment during a financial depression that rakes its ugly claws throughout the world. Hershel Layton is an ex-professor, having had everything ripped from him 7 years ago after an accident that leaves him homeless. He is forced to jump freights and travel relentlessly with the Government, Targent, and a strange assassin on his tail.
Luke Triton is a boy from Misthallery, weary and worn-down from the issues brought on by the depression. When everything he knows is destroyed by money-starved Targent, he runs from what was once his home and hops into a boxcar, quietly joining the company of a then-sleeping man as the train rattles along the rails.
Everything changes when the train is derailed and the two learn of the mysterious Phantom Railway.
He heard something and looked further along. He saw something pale in the water. It thrashed and flailed and disturbed the debris around it. It was alive. Alive like him, stuck here like him. Something desperate in his mind, hidden beyond logic, stumbled and cut through connections to make itself known, shouting and waving its arms before he had the chance to run. An idea. A hope. He held onto it like it was the last rope that kept him from falling. It had to be his boy. Luke. It had to be Luke.
Hershel made a desperate noise at the sight, his eyes widening as if they intended to drag the boy in with their gaze alone. "Luke! Luke! Here, my boy! Here!" Hershel cried, throwing himself forwards and bracing his hands on the gunwale. His heart jumped into his throat and threatened to take flight. Amidst all of this, he was elated! “Come now, kick your legs! You can do it!” He breathed out a tired laugh, the corners of his lips trembling as he tried to smile. If nothing else, he had Luke now! Perhaps he hadn’t made a terrible mistake! Luke was alive. He would get them home and nothing would ever be wrong ever again.
All day on the second day it had been raining. The waves were a bit more vicious, like a dog that had been riled up a bit too much and now its eager bite was starting to leave dents in the skin. The swell tossed the boat without much regard for its passengers. Hershel and Luke stayed in their cabin most of the day, passing the time with books and puzzles, save for when they had to duck out to get food. It was much gentler with the hull than it was with the passengers. Hershel could hear the animals beneath them complaining about their seasickness. He only hoped, for their sake and for his and Luke’s, that they’d be sedated again soon.
Hershel Layton is left adrift at sea after the sinking of the SS Constance.

A Lullaby for an Anchor is a stranded-at-sea story that I plan to maybe delve into Hershel’s mind and human nature itself. It is based off of Life of Pi, one of my favorite novels. Luke also has a big presence in the story! Or at least he is a major plot point. That’s his boy. I couldn’t leave him out ever.
