The Arctic 157 years ago today: Gold Rushes in the Pacific Northwest (19 Jul 1862) https://buff.ly/2JQ0KF0 For some time after the Oregon Treaty, Britain's naval base on Vancouver Island was its only major presence in the Pacific Northwest. However in the late 1850s multiple gold strikes began drawing large numbers of prospectors from the United States to the region. In an attempt to maintain control of this influx and preempt any secessionist movements, the British announced the new colonies of the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, and the Stickeen Territories. The Arctic 110 years ago today: Race to the North Pole (06 Apr 1909) https://buff.ly/2FT9sQF In 1909 American explorer Robert Peary claimed to be the first to reach the North Pole. The Arctic 150 years ago today: Boshin War (27 Jan 1869) https://buff.ly/2RgxGIb In Japan, the instability which had followed the arrival of Perry’s ships had ultimately led to the termination of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the concentration of power in the hands of Emperor Meiji and his supporters. A final attempt to reassert Tokugawa power in the Boshin War was defeated in 1868-9, as imperial forces chased the rebels north into Ezo. The Arctic 168 years ago today: Search for Franklin (21 Oct 1850) https://buff.ly/2R49p8z In 1845 the renowned British explorer Sir John Franklin had set off to find the Northwest Passage, but by winter 1846-7, with no word from Franklin reaching Britain for over a year, it became clear something was wrong.
