The Mito Tokugawas

It's rare to find a glitzy torii. They're usually red or wooden, but here's one in Mito, in lacquer-like black with gold motifs, chief among which is the 3-leaved crest of the Tokugawa clan. Indeed, Mito was home to a particularly influential branch of the shôgunal family.

To start with, Mito has a Tôshô-gû, a shrine dedicated to the first shôgun of the family, Tokugawa Ieyasu. There are several of these across Japan, and I had already visited the one in Ueno, and here is Mito's. Wikipedia has a photo from 2010 when the hall was painted red - I do not know when or why it was changed to black and gold.

A more unique aspect of the Mito Tokugawas is their contribution to the scholarly scene of the Edo period. The second daimyô of the Mito domain, Tokugawa Mitsukuni, founded the Mitogaku, or "Mito school", which compiled a new compendium of Japanese history in the late 17th century, the Dai Nihon-shi. Focusing on native Japanese history, culture and beliefs, it morphed into a conservative samurai movement.

The landing of US forces in 1853 started a 15-year period of unrest and uncertainty after two centuries of firm isolationism: it was the bakumatsu, the twilight of the shôgunate. The ideas of Mitogaku, championed by the domain's 9th daimyô Tokugawa Nariaki, were at the forefront of the nationalist resistance to opening up to foreigners. The Kôdôkan, a samurai school founded by Nariaki, taught these, and was one of the flashpoints of rebellion against the last Tokugawa shôguns, and then, ironically, against the Meiji empire. The end of the Edo period is something I don't know that much about, and that I find rather confusing...
