Black-crowned Night Heron | Ted Ellis
📍 Location: San Francisco, California 🗓 Date: June 4, 2026 🐾 Media: Image 🌿 Species: Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) 📝 Notes: Medium-sized heron found in wetlands, marshes, ponds, estuaries, and shorelines across much of the world. Recognized by its black crown and back, pale gray wings, red eyes, and stocky build.
Primarily active at dawn, dusk, and night, it feeds on fish, crustaceans, amphibians, and other small aquatic animals. Often seen standing motionless along the water's edge, it hunts by waiting patiently before striking quickly at prey. Black-crowned Night Herons commonly nest in colonies among trees, shrubs, or marsh vegetation near water.
