You know that one friend who you don’t see too much, but when you do get to hang you know it’s gonna be an awesome time? For me that’s the Reddish egret. I don’t spot them as often as some other wading birds in my area so when I do it’s a real treat. I always have to stop and watch for a while!
As you can see the Reddish egret is a lively and engaging hunter. They make for an interesting foil to the predatory stillness of some other Ardeids like the Great Blue Heron. I watched this bird hunt for the better part of an hour; it just never gets old. I think a lot of us probably wish we could be so effortlessly beautiful and unselfconsciously hilarious as the Reddish egret!
Great blue heron! This is a small departure from my usual style but I think it turned out well.

How graceful are the wings of a Great Egret, Ardea alba, soaring over the Chikuma River with the mountains of the Shinshu region behind it, bathed in the soft sunlight of a winter afternoon.

Great blue herons are truly impressive predators. Nothing is safe in or around the water when the birds are on the hunt. Even more amazing than their ability to swallow a fish this size whole is the fact that they will go straight back to find the next huge prey immediately after.
