A hard sidelong glance is aimed at her, and an irritated muscle flexes in his jaw.  “----that’s not funny,” he replies, entirely serious. Dinah has plucked a nerve he doesn’t realize exists, one that ends in a tremulous note of fear. It volleys in his stomach with a sudden sickly force. 

“We stick to the plan,” he says firmly as methodical hands assemble the equipment they’ll need, locking the pieces together with angered speed.

He doesn’t want to stay in the car, even opens his mouth to argue, but Dinah knows her business better than he does. Even if the guy she’s about to go talk to looks like someone he’d deal with while in the batsuit. “Fine,” he grumbles, sitting back in his seat a little too similarly to a teenager being told to stay put.

“I appreciate the effort.” His voice is dry, even for him, as he looks down at her and studies her expression meticulously. He can watch the recordings later (over and over and over) but it didn’t compare to having her in front of him, flesh and blood rather than pixels.

The offer came from a kind face, though it didn’t mean he entirely expected it. He had been moving through the land of another house on his trip back to Harrenhal. Not that it was far from King’s Landing it but was still more than a day’s ride away. The entire party needed the break and so they had asked for the hospitality of the house nearest their most recent stop. The lady of the house had seemed kind and her offer and welcoming nature had only matched her appearance. A dip of his head was given in thanks while hand rested on the hilt of his sword, his default position. “You are very kind, my lady.” And he turns to motion to his men to settle themselves in within the walls of her house. However, he wasn’t about to tell them where to go and what to do, that was for her to do as this was her home and they her new quests. “We will be out of your house by the morning to continue on. We won’t be a burden for long.”

With the lessons done with for the day, Mary has followed her schoolmates towards the courtyard, soon finding for herself a spot under a tree to start in her studies; When she spots Amanda, however, her plans are put gladly on hold. Her  ❝ hello, Amanda ! ❞ is sweet-sounding, and there, at the corner of her mouth, a small smile appears. It falters, however, while she is bookmarking her book before closing it. ❝ Would you... ❞ a pause, in which she slowly places the book on her lap. 

❝ Would you like to come and sit a little while with me ? ❞ her question, or invite, rather, starts rushed and, while it slows at the end, it still pitches a little at the e. Here, the smile reappears, but now it looks more apologetic. Lowering her head to hide it from view, Mary busies her hands with taking hold of her things to make more space for Amanda to sit and, while she moves her schoolbag from one side to then place it on the other, she says: ❝ then you can tell me how you’ve been, ❞ a considering pause, then... ❝ how you've really been. ❞
