i love them oh my god
Something I thimk about Ares is that like. He spent most of his life poor and having to work as a mercenary to survive, unlike Seliph who was very well-protected in Tirnanog. But Ares is so fixated on his noble father and honoring his legacy and bringing his killers to justice, and also might have some very vague memories of living with his mother as a child? And thus he probably has like... a biiiiig stick up his butt regarding nobility and people's proper places and so on. Because he's so desperate to prove that his family line Deserves Better Than This - that he's above all these people around him - and that nobles rightly should receive their societal benefits.
But also, there'd be such... embarrassment within him that the blood of Hothr has been reduced to this. It's not just a selfish prissiness, it's a real sense that he's bringing shame to the Nordion lineage by doing any of this, and by not having found a way out of it yet.
When Lene brings up that mercenaries also fight each other just like Eldigan and Sigurd did, he grows quiet. I'm certain he feels that there is a difference of honour, and can't quite believe that he already is the same as a knight.
So: yes, I can definitely see him sorta scoffing at Seliph in various ways, and I can definitely imagine Seliph admiring his independence and self-sufficiency (I have this mental image of Ares chopping wood and Seliph just 👀 with All kinds of feelings rattling around in that pretty head, lmao), but I can also see a really deep-seated envy for Seliph's place, too: to be so widely recognised as the Rightful Heir of a Good Man. And though Ares is largely all kinds of ~manly~ and would struggle to articulate it aloud (because he's tsundere as well), I could see him really embarrassed that he doesn't know how to dress or arrange his hair the way noble men do, or dance like they do in ballrooms. (Lene probably provides some insight into all this, but it's just not the same! He's never actually practised it!!)
And (and this was supposed to be my main point, lol): Seliph is very sensitive to the views and lives of the common people, in part because he grew up as sort of a common people's champion (of Isaach), and in part because he doesn't feel worthy of being compared to his father. So I could see Ares being surprisingly... classist? towards peasants and the like. And Seliph gently challenging that and showing a different way. Which is easy for him because Seliph's never had his own nobility questioned. But it's a fascinating contrast, because Ares is of course the one who actually has the knowledge and practical experience of that life, and from time to time they could come to disagreement about that, and it's just-
It's just interesting!! How much these two contrast one another!!!!
