Lost and Found

The better part of the morning had been occupied by the discordant sounds of her cat’s growling and hissing. The window had become a sightline of the no-man’s-land below— the perfect, warm, sunny day outside where new blooms were beginning to bud and the trees were regrowing their leaves after a particularly brutal winter. By all accounts, there was nothing amiss. Yet, her feline friend had taken station up on her desk, watching the outside world go by with an arched back, hairs standing on end as continued her low, discontented rumbling.
Clearly, there was something out there her companion was none too fond of.
Looking outside, nothing seemed to be amiss. The green grass was coming in nicely. The birds picked at seeds scattered alongside the sidewalk. There was no one outside to say was standing out. Everything was as it should be.
Then it wasn’t.
From behind the trunk of the tree, there was movement. A flash of some dark color, a shape shifting from beneath cover. After a moment, it became clearer. A head. A little nose. Two big ears. A rabbit. It was a rabbit. Easy to dismiss at first— but it warranted a double-take for the sheer size of it.
That was one big bunny.
Bigger than any wild rabbit should be.
It had to be domesticated. Someone’s farm animal? Or worse— someone’s pet!
That fear would only come to be more prominent as the creature stumbled mid-hop, flopping over itself with a screech and a flail of its limbs— one of which caught the sun’s glare with a metallic shine. A prosthetic limb.
Oh yeah. That was definitely someone’s pet.
