Walking around Buenos Aires in the minutes before a World Cup match is magical!
As we hurry to buy our Coke for the Fernet, and some other snacks, a car drives by with people hanging out the sides blowing horns and waving Argentina flags. The energy is even crazier as Argentina is facing The Netherlands in the semi-final in Sao Paulo.
We made it round the corner to our friend's apartment. While waiting outside a golden retriever wearing the Argentine Jersey walks by with his owner, probably getting one quick stroll in before the match. Everyone is skipping as they run to get to a TV in time. Businesses are shuttering their doors with little notes that say "abrimos después de partida" (they'll reopen after the match).
This feels nothing like the warm-up to the Superbowl. This feel so much more important. Today happens to be Independence Day here in Argentina but that's not why there's a flag on every balcony. The match is starting, fernet and coke is poured. VAMOS!
It’s funny because the king of Holland married a (beautiful) woman from Argentina and the Netherlands lost against Argentina. Also, the king’s dad is German and Germany is playing against Argentina now.
