Are Trump and his followers becoming something other than American?
Amid the swirling tide of the Mueller investigation everyone other then Trump and his radical caravan of followers appear ready to watch the last two years of shenanigans, rhetoric, insults and salacious twitter posts get flushed away, so America can get a fresh clean reset.
The republicans, who if you recall before the Nov 2016 elections vehemently fought against Donald Trump becoming the Republican nominee for president, and then conceded to the overwhelming and unexpected mass appearance of marginalized, quirky, conspiracy theorists that followed him like a plague, are starting to duck and cover. As Trump’s deception and corruption seems inevitable to be uncovered many republicans are looking for a way out of their apparent support for the president over the previous two years while democrats continue to band together in a tighter more unified front then they have been since President George W Bush was caught lying about WMD’s in Iraq.
But what about those fringe, awkward Trump followers? On Twitter and news group forums, Facebook and other social media they seem to be more ferocious than ever. Their vehemence and insulting rhetoric, strange ideas and raceism and misogyny seems to have only gotten louder. With the rest of the country stepping back and taking a retrospective view of Trump, his followers seem to have narrowed their view even more and are digging in to defend him regardless of the potential proof that he is an Anti-American criminal that sold this nation's sacred elections to the Cremlin. So what does this make them?
We have seen this before. In history when a man has gone entirely against the majority’s common sense it hasn't always turned out as expected. Hitler's rise to power was against all odds. When he was backed into a corner and common decency seemed ready to prevail he seized power by creating a state of emergency and then usurping Germany's constitution with executive power and violence.
This journalist is not suggesting that Trump plans that level of treason but if he were his supporters seem ready to back it to the very end. In Tweet after tweet, Tumblr posts, facebook posts, and news comment boards Trump supporters seem to support civil war if their man doesn't get his way. You don't have to go very far to see this. Visit nearly any busy topic where liberals and even less radical conservatives are engaging Trump supporters and you will almost always find a Trump supporter saying something like this quote from a Vox news post discussion group.
Comments like this and constant references to the Thomas Jefferson quote "The tree of Liberty must be refreshed with the blood of Patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure."
seem to point to Trump supporters belief that everyone except themselves in the United States today are out to extinguish the light of freedom.
We Americans are in a strange place today. On the one hand Liberals and non-trump conservatives seem to have found a common ground. On the other hand Trumpy conservatives seem to have set themselves into a violent position aligning with white Nationalists, the KKK, Nazi hate groups and other radical potentially violent fringe groups.
It's yet to be seen what will happen when the Mueller investigation into the Trump administration's potential collusion (let's call it what it really may be; treason, selling America's political process to a foreign power) concludes. Will the Trump followers and Trump himself try to form their own Country somewhere in Mississippi and secede from the United States while planning a violent comeback? Will they use their right to bear arms to try and hold the executive branch for their elevated want to be dictator or will they just slink back into their holes, disappear back into society and hold their breath until the next potentially fascist dictator attempts to try and take over the presidency?
