Dedekind could not "prove" this assertion to his colleagues or friends. I’m also sceptical, because:
How do we know what can be proven?
Why is it worth is to be utterly sceptical? Such scepticism takes valuable resources, which might not merit being called in to spot-check, integration-check, and triple-check every jot and iota?
What does it mean to "prove" something? And how do we know, once the thing is proven, that we were really truly correct and final in our analysis of the arguments? Better stop whatever you’re doing, go back, and do a (this time thorough) quadruple check.
Mostly importantly: Who says? Why? Just your opinion, D? Just your personal preference?
