Series Summary:Â War makes victims of everyone. This is something Mal knows too well. An enlisted civilian medic with the GAR, she's been able to rebuild with her chosen family, the Wolfpack, and she's found some semblance of peace in a shattered galaxy. But a request from the famous Captain Rex and a night out at 79's sends her world spiraling as she transfers from the 104th to the 501st and dives back into a search for answers that she had abandoned a long time ago.Â
Malâs new battalion is in the midst of a struggle of its own, having recently survived the horrors of Umbara. The cruelty of a broken Jedi has eroded the fabric of this close-knit group and left behind scars that are hard to heal. ARC Trooper Fives will do anything to protect his vode, and he's not sure if this new addition can be trusted.
Mal and Fives' struggle to save those they care about comes together in unexpected ways, and they find themselves thrust together in a battle for the future of a galaxy far, far away.
Pairing: Fives/OFC
Series Warnings: [Individual chapter warnings/ratings will be included on each post. Series is NSFT/18+] Swearing, Alcohol use, Explicit Sexual Content, Medical Procedures, Canon-typical violence, Character Deaths, Enemies to Lovers Slow BurnÂ
A/N: My first attempt at publishing a series is coming! Itâs a Fives-romance slow burn that spans from just after Umbara to the end of the war. If there is anyone out there who wants to keep up with the series or any of my other content, taglist is here!

[Excerpt from Chapter Four]
Fives followed a familiar path to Rexâs office. The durasteel hallways were empty while everyone was in the mess hall, and the only sound was the rhythmic echo of his boots against the floor. Usually, Fives appreciated these quiet moments alone. He loved his brothers, and he knew he could be as loud as any of âem, but moments where he could hear himself think were precious and far apart when in an army of millions. There was nothing solitary about this moment, though. His thoughts marched beside him, louder than the clang of his footsteps, with memories as all-consuming as the vacuum of space. It wasnât until Fives reached Rexâs door that he snapped out of the deep trance. There were voices on the other side.
The blast door slid open just as Fives raised his hand to knock. He stepped back to let General Skywalker and General Kenobi walk out.
âHello there, Fives,â Kenobi greeted him as Anakin nodded.
âEvening, Generals.â He saluted the Jedi. âCommander Tano.â
The Togruta followed behind the Masters, buzzing with an excitement that Fives knew could only mean a new mission. Good, Fives thought. He was itching for a fight. They had been on the sidelines since Umbara, which hadnât been that long ago, but the memories had a settled into his mind like a fine dust and he was ready to shake them away. Blaster fire and busting up a bunch of clankers should do the trick.
âBe nice to Rex,â Ahsoka winked at Fives and he felt his icy mood melt just a little. Ahsokaâs good moods were infectious around the 501st. When she was happy, they all had to be. âHe just spent hour trying to rein in Skyguy's battle plans.â
Her master shot a look of annoyance at the padawan and the clone before he chuckled and shrugged.
âSheâs not wrong.â Anakin flashed a brazen grin at the ARC trooper.
âIâm shocked, General.â Fives smiled back before he turned to Ahsoka with a wink of his own. âAnd when have I ever bothered Rex?â
All three Jedi laughed at that.
âHave a good evening, Fives.â Anakin bowed his head before the Jedi turned back to their journey, likely back to the Temple.
âYou too, Sirs.â
Fives stepped into the dark office space. Rex sat at his desk, massaging his temples, as he frowned at a holomap glowing in the dim light.
âTano and Kenobi act like Skywalkerâs the crazy one, but theyâre all just as bad.â Rex groaned, not looking up at Fives.Â
âWeâll make the most of their plans and take whatever the Seppies throw at us.â Fives settled into one of the chairs across from Rex. âYou know that, Captain.â
âOf course,â Rex pressed his thumb to a button on his desk, and the holomap disappeared. The lights returned to the room, and he leaned back into his chair, taking on the quiet calm that came from being alone with an old friend. âWhatâs on your mind, Fives?â
Fives sighed. He never could keep anything from Rex. Maybe it was because they were brothers, or maybe it was because Rex had known him since he was a shiny on his first mission. Sometimes, he suspected it was because he was similar to Rex in ways the blonde clone would never admit. Whatever it was, Rex could tell he wasnât just in his office for a nightcap.
âThe new medic⊠whatâs her deal?â Fives asked, hoping his voice was more neutral than he felt.
âMal?â Rex raised an eyebrow at him. âComes highly decorated and recommended from the 104th. Took everything I had to pry her from Wolffe.â
âYeah?âÂ
âYeah, he hung up on me the first three times I asked.â
âWe need medics that bad?â Fives frowned.
âNot just medics. We need the best medics.â Then Rex laughed. âCome on, Fives. You know that better than anyone. Kix is ready to ban you from the medbay.â
Fives tried to smile at the joke but found it refused to come. Instead, he kept thinking about her.
âAnd sheâs the best?âÂ
âWhatâs on your mind, Fives?â Rex repeated. âYouâre usually not this shy about sharing.â
âDunnoâŠâ Sheâs hiding something. He wanted to shout, but instead, he hesitated. They did need medics, and they needed good ones. If she was that good, his brothers would be better off with her around. âJust have some questions about her, is all.â
âWell, Iâm here if you need anything.â Rex reached for his datapad, sensing the conversation was over. âJust try not to kill her or kriff her.â
Fives finally forced a laugh as he stood with a small salute.
âRoger, roger.â
Fives shut the door behind him, leaving Rex to his plans. The silent hallways that lined his path back to the barracks were even louder on his return route. Malâs face swam before him. A flash of her laugh and the parting of her full lips melted into the image of her stoic greeting. He thought of how she shifted in her seat at the mention of Takodana. There was no doubt about it. Mal was hiding more than just their night together, and Fives would have to keep an eye on her until he found out what it was.

Master Di had feigned ignorance for months now. He pretended he didnât see the first moment that they had locked eyes and he just kept pretending after that. Maybe he should have intervened right away but the war pulled his attention from his Padawan. After all, she was nearly ready for her trials and had proved herself time and time again. He assumed the diliances of youth would fade as time went on. So he ignored it. Now though, he couldnât pretend anymore. His Padawan and his commanding officer were embracing right in front of him.Â
They were pressed against the shadows of the rocky terrain, oblivious to any eyes watching from the darkness of the night. It was a well hidden spot. Only someone who hadnât been able to sleep and walked far from camp, perhaps to ease his own troubled mind, would have stumbled upon them. Unfortunately, that meant that Master Di watched as his padawan wept and Keeli pulled her into his arms.
âI donât want to go.â She let out a small sob into his chest. âNot without you.â
âI know.â He ran a hand through her hair, tilting her face up to his. âBut you have to. These are our orders.â
âBut you and Master DiâŠâ She stuttered.
âI will protect him and he will look after me. Weâll see you again soon but we need you to lead Cham and the resistance to safety.â
âYou swear youâll be okay?â
âYes.âÂ
Master Di could hear what Keeli didnât say, that as long as he knows that she is safe, he will be okay. He knew those unspoken words because he felt the same. He envied the Jedi who didnât grow attached to their padawans. He couldnât imagine feeling anything but a deep fatherly love for her and, when he thought about it, that had a lot to do about why he ignored the obvious, budding relationship between her and Keeli. He wanted her to be happy and he wanted her to be loved. He slipped back to his tent, leaving the couple alone in the dark.
She left with the first wave of refugees in the early morning light. In the chaos of the retreat, there was no time for goodbyes or soft words. Instead, Master Di and Keeli stood side-by-side, watching her retreat. She glanced over her shoulder, sending them a small wave. Keeli saluted her, letting his eyes linger just for a moment as she turned on the blurrg and began to lead the families over the mountain.
âŠ
Now, they wait at the base of the ravine. Tension ripples through the men and small clicks echo off the walls like raindrops on stone as they check and recheck their weapons. Master Di stands next to his captain, the only one of the men who isnât fidgeting.Â
âCaptain, I must confess. I saw you last night.â Master Diâs words are light but meaning is deeply intertwined with every syllable.
Keeliâs face reveals nothing. He isnât going to flinch unless he is given no choice. So Master Di changes his course and meets him head on.
âWith my Padawan.â
âAh.â When Keeli finally flinches, it is no more than the slightest twitch of his jaw. Di smiles just a bit as he admires his Captainâs courage.
âKeeli,â He starts before the clone quickly speaks.
âIf youâre looking for someone to blame, the fault is mine.â
âRight now?â Master Di guides Keeliâs eyes to the army of droids about to descend on them, marching down the middle of the ravine. âThat is not my concern.â
Keeli gives him a small smile. Master Di finds himself wishing that they had more time. While that thought consumes him for a moment, Keeli speaks up.
âI know my role, General. I know where my focus needs to be.â Keeli chooses his words carefully. âBut I canât deny how I feel, especially when I feel it with all that I am. I live for her and I would die for her.â
âWeâre not supposed to have attachments.â Master Di frowns as he turns his eyes towards the thankfully empty west ridge. She is safe, along with Cham and the twiâlek resistance. There is no time left for being precious. No time for worrying about what the Council would think. They are not here and they arenât coming. âBut sheâs been like a daughter to me and I confess I feel the same.â
Keeli nods before he slides his helmet over his head.
âWell thenâŠâ His voice trails off as he focuses on the swell of B2s about to consume them.
The drone of the droids almost drowns out Diâs next words.
