Here is our interview with ariestess - about The Story of Emma and Me: A Fairytale for My Granddaughter

What inspired your story?

Well, the easy answer is bouquetemoji's gorgeous artwork, "the place you escape to", and the poem used in it. But it was more than that. I really liked the idea of combining what we knew might be coming in S7 with Regina and Emma being grandmothers with all that we'd known of their relationship in S1-S6. The idea of Lucy wanting to know all about this huge aspect of her life that wasn't really covered in the various story books just hit me hard, and I let Regina start to tell her story, their story, as only she could.

Let's get deep: why do you write?

I can't not write. It's like a marrow deep need in me to write all the time. I don't feel right if I'm not getting the words out in some way, shape, or fashion. Yes, a lot of it is cathartic, but I don't always know that going into the project. It can be a discovery post-writing that hits like the proverbial ton of bricks, and then I need to work through that, usually with more words.

Do you ever have conversations with your characters, and talk back to them?

Oh, I talk with them a lot, but mostly I listen to their conversations amongst themselves. It's rather enlightening and has given me so much good source material...

What is your favorite type of writing to do?

The short answer? Yes. The long answer? I like to write a lot of things. It's mostly a mood thing as to what specifically I'll write in a given situation, or based on what I have open with regard to deadlines. As for types of writing? Fanfic and poetry top the list. I tend toward shorter fic [under 5k words], but I always want to do longer fics, which is why I enjoy bigbangs. I've mostly done one shots because of the length of fic I tend to write, but I love to create whole series and often do that instead of long, chaptered fics. I have a real issue with posting WiPs, so I don't do it for the most part. As for genres? I'd like to say that I dabble a little bit in everything, like a Jill of all trades, but when push comes to shove, I gravitate toward angst and curtain!fic/domestic fluff. I really would like to branch out more into horror-style fic, and need to brush up my fantasy and romance etiquette, too.

If you could live out one scene of your writing what would it be?

There are so many scenes from my writing over the years that I'd love to see played out, and so many others that have been inspired by my own life or the lives of those around me. I take inspiration where I can, and sometimes that means using it in a cathartic way.

How do you shape your characters?

This is one of those questions that depends on the project and the characters in question. In the case of this fic, I just took the redeemed Regina we saw at the end of S6 and aged her up a few years, let her organically continue on that redemptive and personally transformative path she was on, and then I just let her write. I didn't shy away from tough subjects for her, even knowing she was writing for a child. The Regina we saw in canon never shied away from the truth once she'd set foot on her path toward redemption, especially with Henry, and I knew that this would continue with her granddaughter. So, while she glossed over some details, she laid it all out for Lucy because she wouldn't dream of lying to her family ever again. Nor would she ever consider taking the easy way out for her own peace of mind. She knows what she'll be atoning for for the rest of her life and she's willing to face it head on if it means keeping that fragile sense of inner calm and acceptance that she craves so much.

Umm... at least 13 years?

SVU will always be my number one so...

SVU. Duh. Eagerly awaiting season 21!

Reba Hart... or maybe Kyra so I could be her daughter.

Yes! Just ask @shatterpath who brilliantly paired Susan Vasquez with Kyra Hart and easily made me ship Reba/J’onn.

18. Overall, which show has the better storyline, 3 or 5?

Probably 9-1-1 tbh because Supergirl has seasons/episodes that are either amazing or absolutely horrible.
