Yet another strike hit her, knocking Arturia to the ground with a shout of anger.
“Can’t you land one hit, Wart?” The mocking voice of her brother stung her more than the hit of his wooden sword did. And to top it all off, he was using that stupid nickname again… Was it to anger her? To get her to be more reckless?
She watched him step forward, blade raised for attack. She wasn’t going to let him hit her with this one. She would be faster! Her size would come in handy for once! With no second thought, she jumped up and leapt forward, her sword raised–And right into Kay’s trap.
She was nearly knocked unconscious as she felt the hilt smash into her face.
“Kay?!” It was difficult for her to shout his name rather than scream out in pain, but she wouldn’t allow him to have that victory, no matter how small it was. “Th-That’s unfair! It’s uncalled for!” She brought a hand to her face, touching it tenderly. Looking down at her gauntlet, she could see small drops of blood. Perhaps a bloody nose? She wasn’t going to stop and find out now.
“Nobody ever said that all fights are fair.” There was no sympathy in his voice, and he wasted no time in charging forward for another attack. “I’m teaching you valuable lessons that my old man will not.”
She hardly had enough time to react, only managing to bring her sword up to barely block his attack. It was now clear to her that she wouldn’t get anywhere with the honorable rules of battle… She would have to play by his book, and she could already think of a plan.
Tightening the grip on her sword she swung it back, preparing herself. With a leap, she charged forward at her brother, letting out a cry as she did. As soon as she reached him she swung–
But at his sword, rather than him. She heard a snap as their blades made contact, and felt her sword grow lighter in her hands. Looking at the blades, her fears were confirmed as she saw hers in two pieces. But that was of no matter now. It clearly caught him off guard, and she watched as he tried to counter her move. Before he could do so, she moved to her next plan of action. Ducking underneath his arms, she lifted a leg–
And kicked him as hard as she could in the gut.
She heard a shout and she quickly jumped back, not wanting to get hit once more. Certain she was safe, she watched him while panting, trying to recover her own breath. She watched him open his mouth to speak, and was expecting backlash, but found herself surprised instead.
“A… Decent hit. But not good enough.” Dropping his sword, Kay staggered back for a moment, letting out a few harsh coughs. Straightening up, he then turned around and began to walk away. “Nothing changes, though. I still win as usual.” Pausing for a moment, he turned to look at her, still lying on the ground with her now-broken sword clutched tightly in her hands.
“Keep up your good work and you might actually stand a chance against me.” He turned around once more walking off, muttering out loud. “I’ll look forward to it.”
The comment was not unheard by the girl who now held a hand up to her nose no longer really conscious, or caring for that matter, about the bleeding. Despite all that had happened, there was a grin slowly growing on her face.
“I’ll look forward to it too, big brother.”
She’d just have to do something about these minor injuries for now, lest Sir Ector give her and Kay an earful for it.
“Hmm… It’s a bit strange to smile at such a memory… Isn’t it?” She wasn’t exactly sure why it made her so happy herself. It wasn’t as though she won.
Maybe it was just the praise from Kay…
It was among the first she had gotten from her big brother, after all.
