all dressed up & nowhere to run
All James could think about was how itchy he was.
It had begun with the suit, brand new and glossy, and far too stiff to be comfortable, at least not for the first couple hours of wear. The tie didn’t help, and especially not once Sofia had redone it for him, knotting the damned thing dangerously close to his windpipe (or so it felt, anyway). His palms had been next, sweaty and itchy enough on their own without the startched sleeves of that damn suit to scratch against them as he tried to dry them off. And his conscience--- Oh, his conscience.
The entrance hall was packed with students, but James didn’t really pay much mind. He scanned the crowd, not taking much in, not really trying to at all. He didn’t know what he was doing here. He didn’t want to be here. Everything was itchy, and warm, and wrong, and---
And Arista was waiting for him at the foot of the stairs, looking as lovely as ever in her gown.
And James was trying not to think about what Niamh’s dress looked like, and who she was waiting for in it.
He took a strangled, itchy breath, and smiled at Arista, tossing an arm over her shoulders (robotically, if he had the time to analyze it). “What do you think of all this?”
