Parental Dynamic: Earnest and Arken.
Honestly just to sum it up #KnowersKnow.
Arken and Earnest's relationship falls into the Absent, But Hardworking Mexican Father thing.
In the small cutscene we had pre game events it felt like Arken himself knew that he was not equipped to handle raising Earnest, let alone without Amara. Earnest Idolized him greatly as a child, and it was partially because he always felt more like a legendary statue of some great King that happened to be his father vs knowing his father as...a person.
Honestly I should get into how I characterize Arken as a whole...but I'll do that some other time.
I need to making 1 thing very clear. Arken loves Earnest, in fact he loves him so much that it's his fervent love for his son that he stays away from him. He is afraid that he will do or say the wrong thing, he is afraid to hurt him further, so he keeps his distance, his love forms in providing everything he needs. He gets word from one of Earnest's many tutors that he would like a certain book, a certain table for easier study, and it appears the next day, if not within hours. Neither of them acknowledge this. When Earnest, as a child, goes to him asking for some commoner orphan boy to be sheltered, to be allowed to be in his company. Arken allows it, he arranges things with Gaul to house simon, They don't speak of it again.
It is negligence formed out of fear of loving the wrong way.
I made a tweet that was like
"Imagining a time where Arken and him are standing in Silence and Arken tells him that as a consequence of amara leaving and the riots that followed that he will need to be perfect and excel as a prince or else he risks further scrutiny as her son and Earnest just goes "As you say."
This to me would cement his very forcibly reserved personality as he molds himself into something that will be just that. He used to be so bright and bubbly and carefree then becomes a statue... emotionally reserved, sad, but perfect.
Just like Arken."
Arken tells him this out of necessity, because it's best for him. Always what's best for him, in HIS eyes. He hopes that sending Earnest out to war will force him from the shell of his political duties, that it will harden him enough to bring out the person Arken can see he is capable of being. He knew how Earnest USED to be, he wants to ser it again. And in the end? Hes not really WRONG because everything that happens in mhs3 DOES push Earnest to finally allow himself to be who he truly is. He just...always fumbles and goes about this in the wrong way.
In terms of Earnest's gayness, I really don't think he knew. He wasnt Around Earnest enough to see the signs that only a parent could see. Like most other people, a lot of more subtle signs were simply brushed aside as being part of the melancholy cloud he carried after losing amara. Simon, as a boy who served as the prince's companion, was not questioned bc their relationship was standard. Maybe there should have been More friend of the prince, but the nature of it wasn't that strange. Especially since all their more intimate moments happened far from the castle anyway. But. All this to say, he isn't necessarily Too Too shocked to find out about Earnest and Simon when rumors start floating about post mhs3 and then Earnest eventually comes out to him when everything about Earnest having to marry a woman becomes too serious to ignore.
Arken doesn't love him less, but its more of. Concern. He says he can quell the rumors, he says that he can still marry and keep his relationship to the bedroom. Many men have lives outside their wives, especially in politically arranged marriages. This is all terrible, but he sees it as a "comfort." Earnest essentially yells that he doesnt want Simon to be relegated to the bedroom, that they have more than just a dalliances, that he is tired of trying to be someone hes not. Arken doesn't budge right away...it's simply not how things are done. So Earnest storms off and it takes a week of Earnest avoiding him and speaking very coldly until he recognizes hes losing whats left of his relationship with his son on such limited time anyway. So thinks everything over, he comes up with not a solution to the entire problem, but a solution nonetheless. He twist This Specific relationship to be an Exception.
ESSENTIALLY how it resolves is that arken and Eleanor essentially help push the narrative of the NEW twin rathalos being a positive omen! Meaning their riders (earnest being both Azurian and Vermeilian) (simon being from the village that was neither) would be the epitome of unity to recreate lazlion. Tldr: They warp a public union between them into something that is both political and symbolic in nature, so it becomes an "acceptable exception" to the rule. There is still some uproar over this mostly concern over the azurian royal lineage as Earnest being gay mean??? No heir???? Luckily when Earnest takes over as king he does such a good job those uproars quiet down over time. Thats the power of #Charisma.
But anyway. I don't really think Earnest Hated Arken. Well, I think it fluctuates. Maybe as a teenager he did, then it went back down again. I think it mostly adds onto his sadness. The sort of reverence he had for Arken does soften the blow because he takes Arken's emotional absence as being necessary as the now sole ruling monarch, also dealing with the loss of his mother, and maybe he blames himself in a way. Maybe he reminds him too much of her... god I have so many thoughts bc Earnest's feelings are so much more tangled. Its like. He knows Arken provided things for him, he knows he looks like his mother and that would affect his father, he respected him so much he thinks that He is the problem and not his father. The only time he ends up Hard disagreeing is when it comes to using Ratha as a weapon of war. He feels he is a disappointment, that if he was better things between them might be easier. But he wishes his father hugged him, he wishes his father didn't walk away before he made it back to the landing zone during his riding lessons. He wishes he had a parent, he wishes things were different. He wishes that it didn't taken Arken dying for him to have a change of heart.
