I don't know why it's such a shock to me when a film decides to actually kill Ewan McGregor's character. He always gives off the vibes of a "endures but suffers" or a "changed forever" kind of character when he's not in a happy movie.
I think watching a series of films like Trainspo + Shallow Grave + Young Adam + Moulin Rouge! + Black Hawk Down in a short period of time shapes a kind of expectation for his character.
