[Image description: A colored pencil drawing of Gelmir and Arminas from the Silmarillion. Gelmir is an elf man with warm brown skin, gray eyes, and long dark wavy hair; he is wearing a blue robe and a chain earring down his long pointed ear. Arminas is an elf man a few inches taller than Gelmir, with dark brown skin, brown eyes, and long dark dreads. They stand arm in arm, with Gelmir smiling up playfully at Arminas, who has an expression of mild distress, as if he wishes he were somewhere else. End image description.]
@aspecardaweek day five | relationships | queerplatonic gelmir + arminas
These two are probably my most niche rarepair! They’re the elves that give Tuor directions on his way to the sea and then show up in Nargothrond warning Orodreth to tear down the bridge. They were once of Angrod’s people, but after the Dagor Bragollach they joined Círdan’s folk, and it was his message from Ulmo that they carried to Nargothrond.
That’s all canon - my headcanon is that they’re in a queerplatonic relationship! They have a platonic soul bond and balance each other’s personalities: Gelmir is more easygoing but prone to flights of fancy, where Arminas is grumpy but incredibly sharp and practical.
Canon says they’re both Amanyar, but while I could figure out a Quenya name for Arminas (Artaminassë) I couldn’t figure anything out for Gelmir, so I’ve decided that in my headcanon Gelmir is the son of a Noldorin exile and her Sindarin husband. Arminas is from Aman, and had only just come of age when he began the trek across the Ice; he lost many family members and grew to resent the nobility that led them into such peril.
Neither Gelmir nor Arminas are nobility or royalty, which is a rarity for Silm characters! Arminas tolerated Angrod, who looked out for him on the Ice, but he’s much more at ease with Círdan, who only acts as a Lord when it comes to diplomacy with other elven leaders.
Gelmir and Arminas survive the First Age and sail to Valinor at the end of the War of Wrath, where Arminas gets to show his partner the land of his birth, and they live happily ever after :)
