France won after Pogba's surge into the box was deflected home by an Aussie defender. They struggled to dominate against well-organised, gutsy Australia, but were still the better team. They don't look a great threat.....yet.

Peru at times outclassed Denmark, and were clearly the better team, yet lost, a penalty miss playing a big part. A stroppy looking Christian Eriksen played as an out and out winger for most of the match. Denmark's winner, though, was as a result of his pass from central midfield.

Good to see the long throw utilised at the World Cup. Seriously. After a fairly even first half, which ended with the score 1-1, Argentina laid siege in the second, but met Iceland's massed defence, doing a great job, 8-9 players often congregated around the edge of their box. Even Messi couldn't wriggle through the forest of bodies. And the great man missed a penalty too. Halldorsson, the Iceland keeper, made the save of the tournament after a cross evaded everyone.

Nigeria were seriously disappointing after looking ready for a big World Cup. They lacked the fire and spark they've been showing so often recently, and instead were lacklustre. Difficult to know why. Croatia outclassed them at times and cruised home, and looked one of the best teams seen so far.

Mario Mandzukic (number 17) was involved in both goals, here being fouled for a penalty. Earlier his header was deflected home for an own goal.
