Orientation Scavenger Hunt Recap
Walking into Tegler I see Brett Farquharson (Concordia’s Student Recruitment Specialist), full of gusto and enthusiasm, leading the first year “troops” into an epic and informative battle. Kelton and Teddy, two first year gentlemen, thought the event seemed “pretty awesome so far.” The orientation scavenger hunt had two sides: blue and yellow. Everyone was divided into teams named after types of weather or natural disasters. Tony Wong, The Bolt’s Entertainment Writer, was the leader of the Black Ice team. On his team was Naomi, a first year arts student, who found orientation to be really welcoming and tons of fun. She was a little timid with the crowds of people at first but was excited to begin the new year. Each team had a student volunteer to guide them through orientation and teach them a few tips on thriving in university. Chris Vollweiter remarked that being an orientation leader was a great experience and tons of fun. The Cyclone’s leaders, Elise Sargent and Jason Knorr, were two of the many volunteers who took time out of their busy lives to usher the first years into this new stage of education. Elise, a graduated science student, felt it was a bittersweet experience seeing the new generation come into the halls of Concordia. She will dearly miss the university that she has called home for the last three years but she was very hopeful and excited to be part of the new students’ experience. Jason thought that 7AM was a little early to be pumped up and ready to lead but he was enjoying himself anyway. Marta was part of Elise and Jason’s group and she is beginning her Bachelor of Arts degree. She found the scavenger hunt to be helpful and she could not wait to find her classrooms.
Another dynamic team of students was the Polar Vortex, led by Launcelot Lindoff. He seemed under control and very happy to be volunteering. Grace, a first year music and education student, agreed that Launcelot is a natural born leader. David, also on the Polar Vortex team, expressed his energy and enthusiasm toward the day and to officially becoming a Concordia student. David said that upon receiving confirmation of his enrollment he had one of those “YES!” moments. He is a music student who can play the organ, the piano, the guitar, the accordion, and percussion instruments as well. Look out for him folks!
Hurricane’s leaders, Bethany Froese and Gina Bazzarelli, were super pumped and thrilled to be there. They were full of energy, and they were confident that they would win the scavenger hunt. Most students seemed to really appreciate being inducted into the Concordia community. Jeff, an open studies student, found that the event exceeded his expectations. Megan Bobowsky, a first year Psychology major and drama minor, stated that the orientation was great, her leaders were awesome, and the whole experience was extremely helpful. Brian, Joseph, and Curtis are all in the three year Philosophy program and seminary. They loved how easy it was to find everything they needed and that all their classes were in the same building. These guys had only known each other for a few weeks but they already seemed to appreciate the roommates and friends they acquired through university.
A special thanks to all of the caring volunteers and staff who made such a fun and welcoming day possible. Thank you to the new students who participated in the orientation, and welcome to Concordia everyone!
