Dude there are literally people who call others racist/homophobic for shipping wrong pairings
This is one of the things where the grain is really small, but it’s still kinda there.
Black characters get literally ignored everywhere in shipping. Sam/Steve? Nope, better ship while people with white people. Billie/Daud? Nope, if it was a guy maybe it would have worked, if she was white it would have maybe worked too, but a black woman? Nahh, not interested.
Only exception is really with Force Awakens, funnily enough.
This kind of stuff is not racist in the terms of singular racism (is that even a word), but in the terms of demographics. When everyone spontaneously ignores close relationships black characters have and prefers to ship literally anyone but black people, it has its roots in racism.
And like with so much racism stuff it’s not something you can fight by calling people out. If you don’t feel a pairing, you just don’t feel it, regardless of whether it’s your homophobia, racism or whatever speaking.
I guess, I thought it was interesting how close to reality this type of observation was. It’s a very silly thing to comment on, because... who really cares about shipping. But at the same time it was true that black characters have this big “ehhhh, no, thanks” shipping aura.
What do you do against that though? Not much, I guess. Talk about it? Think on it? Feel enlightened and procceed shipping white stuff? =/
