Croissant with my grandma, mom, and brother
Dec 6 2022
Tour de Croissant 2017 was a hard-fought battle. We took to the streets on two wheels to uncover all the strong contenders this city has to offer. But in the end, no one could top the fresh and buttery goodness of Arsicault, who took the top spot in all three categories (best sweet, best savory and best plain). Honorable mentions to @neighborbakehouse and @bpatisserie who showed strong in the sweet and savory categories, and to all our stage bakeries, who welcomed our hungry crews with excellent pastries and hot coffee. Until next year, keep it calorie positive. #arsicault #arsicaultbakery #tourdecroissant #tourdecroissant2017 #fatcakeclub (at Arsicault Bakery)
Almond - Arsicault (Richmond District, SF)
Omg sorry, I accidentally took a couple bites in the car before I remembered I was doing this. Anyway, here is the almond croissant from Arsicault, Bon Appétit’s Best Bakery of 2016. It was $5, which is like a whole dollar more than what I am comfortable with paying for a croissant, and probably their most popular item. I went on a Wednesday morning when there was no line and had to wait a few minutes after getting to the case for a new batch to come out. And then the lady in front of me and I bought up the whole tray. You can get three max of any item when it’s busy, otherwise there’s no limit.
As you can see, it’s powdered sugar dusted, but no shaved almonds or that cakey stuff on top. (Googled- and it’s just the almond filling that they put on top. Didn’t know that, shame on me.) This is arguably the best croissant I’ve ever had. It was super flaky, perfectly golden brown and caramel-y on the outside, and so so so chewy on the inside. The texture is really satisfying and probably the best part about it. The almond filling is not too sweet and there’s lots of it.
Here is an artfully cropped view where you can’t see that I took some chomps out of it already, featuring Chewie, our friends’ dog, who is also coming over to check out the croissant action. Thanks to Anisa and Michael who let me go over to their place to hang out with Chew and apparently to also use the great natural lighting in their cozy apartment to snap pics of croissants.
