My Adventures with "Frida" the Movie
I went to a local media store for the sole purpose of picking up "Frida". I had previously written an article in regards to what I had researched about her and discovered her imagery to be haunting and beautiful. What I found at the media store disturbed me. I was was looking in the exact slot where "Frida" should be and only saw "Friday Night Lights", which had SEVEN facings all together. Curious, I started taking down the first few facings until I discovered two copies of "Frida" hidden in the back. I purchased one and fixed the display so other art fans could find it. This evening, I sat down with my husband and watched this spectacular movie. We had to frequently pause the movie to discuss and debate Frida and the actions/emotions she displayed. We threw around the idea that she dressed in men's clothing not for the surface level idea that she struggled with her sexual identity, but the possibility that she struggled with her self image after being disfigured for most of her life. Or perhaps her aspiration to be like her father, who she so much admired. We talked of how she knew Diego would not be faithful, and she herself wasn't - My husband thought that she was upset because they no longer loved each other. He felt she was a rebel and solitary person who felt confined to tradition. I thought she was upset because she never wanted Diego to be unfaithful, and although she rebelled in many ways, could not find it within herself to separate her emotions from logic. Friday is an enigma to this day. We can read, watch, and discuss her and the events of her life without fully knowing the truth of who she was and what she aspired to be. I find her work and her image intriguing and unforgettable.
