For my art essentials class, we were assigned to create a museum exhibition over the topic of our choice. I decided to name mine “Female Pharaohs and Feminine Royalty in Egyptian Society” which focused on female royalty in Egyptian society. On Monday, I was the first to present, and I was incredibly nervous since I had spent so much time and effort on my exhibition. I prefer to keep things succinct and to the point, so speaking for five minutes to ten minutes was a challenge for me. As I started to go over the elements I had discussed in my paper it became easier for me to present and make eye contact with others. Some elements I discussed in my paper included: theme, the artifacts on view, color, light, and traffic capabilities. In the paper, the element I had the most trouble talking about was light. I never really noticed how museums lit up certain artworks and at what intensity they would choose to keep the artworks from deteriorating.
I always feel so in tune with the environment. It gives me great inspiration to just be outside and be free and not have to care about work or assignments or due dates, and I truly wish as my artistic self wants that it could be like this for the rest of my life. Somehow someday I'll work it out to where I'm my own boss and I don't have to abide by age old rules of how an adult should function. Being out here for Thanksgiving helps me want to go out there and make what I wish to make all the more, but I ground myself by realizing I still have a lot to learn. I just wish it didn't cost money to learn, and I wish grades in the art field wouldn't exist. I believe we should explore any and every idea openly and not have rules even to begin with. It's a stretch to go about it but we can't help but have art be a subjective idea, ever-changing in other people's minds. There's no such thing as good art or bad art, art just is and art is there to make us think, and never give us the answer.
Along with the “Winged Deities” at the Kimbell, I also got to see “Two Gibbons Reaching for the Moon”, and when I first looked at this artwork I only saw the caring mother and child relationship. Since I don’t know how to read Mandarin, I looked at the placard to see if it would translate but instead it said something completely different from what I expected. The placard does not translate the mandarin at the top but tells its own interpretation of the theme of this artwork. It mentions how the gibbons are the representation of always reaching for something greater than themselves. I really enjoy the thought of always improving myself. The rest of the placard goes to say how if they stop looking all will be lost. This artwork inspires but also can instill a sense of despair unto the viewer.
