Week 4: Reading
Chapter 2
As someone who isn’t much of an artist, color was always a concept hard to grasp. I saw color and didn’t think much more than “oh pretty colors.” Reading chapter two talked about how there is a contrast between elements in the foreground and background of an image. Color helps create depth, and better imagery. I also never considered how much texture color adds. Shaping within in an image is important, the color of the shapes can help reveal different meanings. The first example I thought of was a stick figure that is colored pink may be saying that the figure is a girl, if it was blue, then it is a boy. (Thank you society, for giving colors a gender, because stereotypes are always so great.) Without those two colors on those stick figures then the audience wouldn’t be able to give characteristics to said figures. Using that same example of stick figures, lines help tell the story as well. If the lines were not shaped in the right way, then it would not show that they were people. This chapter discussed about how all these things help create an appealing image to look at. Lines, color, shapes, contrast etc are all important factors to think about when looking at a piece of art. Contrast is something a lot of artists use to focus your attention to one aspect of a picture. All these things are needed to help create a good piece of art.
Week 3: Reading
Color is one of the first things you notice while looking at an image. It can cause a viewer to like or dislike the piece at hand. Color is used to brand items, create a story, and it even acts as an exclamation point as said in this chapter. There is hue, saturation, color temperature, and value. All of these are very important in coloring an image. Color is produced by light which is why some people will see different colors than other people. My first thought while reading this chapter was the dress fiasco a few months back. Some people looking at the dress saw the colors blue and black, others saw gold and white. Both people were in fact right. It all depends on how color hits your eye. With color saturation a more saturated hue is a more vivid/brighter color. Coloring is important in storytelling. A lot of people associate the color (or shade I suppose) black as a color of sadness, because it is dark. This chapter talked about how artist have studied the effect that color have. Color combination is also important. Some colors go really well together, when others do not look good at all. An example would be green and red. Usually those colors are associated with Christmas. When looking at colors, a color wheel is always helpful. As someone who dyes their hair a lot, I look at hair dyeing color wheels to help figure out what color I can make my hair be.
