Week 4: Reading
Chapter 2
As someone who isn’t much of an artist, color was always a concept hard to grasp. I saw color and didn’t think much more than “oh pretty colors.” Reading chapter two talked about how there is a contrast between elements in the foreground and background of an image. Color helps create depth, and better imagery. I also never considered how much texture color adds. Shaping within in an image is important, the color of the shapes can help reveal different meanings. The first example I thought of was a stick figure that is colored pink may be saying that the figure is a girl, if it was blue, then it is a boy. (Thank you society, for giving colors a gender, because stereotypes are always so great.) Without those two colors on those stick figures then the audience wouldn’t be able to give characteristics to said figures. Using that same example of stick figures, lines help tell the story as well. If the lines were not shaped in the right way, then it would not show that they were people. This chapter discussed about how all these things help create an appealing image to look at. Lines, color, shapes, contrast etc are all important factors to think about when looking at a piece of art. Contrast is something a lot of artists use to focus your attention to one aspect of a picture. All these things are needed to help create a good piece of art.
Week 3: Reading
Color is one of the first things you notice while looking at an image. It can cause a viewer to like or dislike the piece at hand. Color is used to brand items, create a story, and it even acts as an exclamation point as said in this chapter. There is hue, saturation, color temperature, and value. All of these are very important in coloring an image. Color is produced by light which is why some people will see different colors than other people. My first thought while reading this chapter was the dress fiasco a few months back. Some people looking at the dress saw the colors blue and black, others saw gold and white. Both people were in fact right. It all depends on how color hits your eye. With color saturation a more saturated hue is a more vivid/brighter color. Coloring is important in storytelling. A lot of people associate the color (or shade I suppose) black as a color of sadness, because it is dark. This chapter talked about how artist have studied the effect that color have. Color combination is also important. Some colors go really well together, when others do not look good at all. An example would be green and red. Usually those colors are associated with Christmas. When looking at colors, a color wheel is always helpful. As someone who dyes their hair a lot, I look at hair dyeing color wheels to help figure out what color I can make my hair be.
Week 3; Writing (Manifesto)
Artsy Art
We are clean, unique, and open.
Accepting, welcoming and educated.
Thoughtful, passionate, and motivated.
Free, inspired and here.
We are art, we are everywhere.
Week 3; Research
While looking for successful store models I immediately thought about Taco Bell. More specifically, a menu, and how you show what items you have to sell. Presentation matters, so in order to draw in an audience you need the store, and product to look nice and organized. Another store model would be the movie bins in Walmart. You go to any Walmart and can find the cheap movies all thrown in a big bin together, I think that is successful because it puts all the supplies that lies within the same price range, together. Price may be irrelevant in our store, but maybe a bin could be a useful place for certain supplies. The last store model I found was the jewelry store in medford. They display all their jewelry in cases, separated by type, and size. That type of organization could be useful with art supplies suck as paint brushes, or different sized markers and things.
Week 3; Reading
While attempting to read the assigned readings for the week I found myself having to go through and read "Collaborative, Creative Place making..." multiple times. It was rather difficult for me to understand, and maybe that is just my poor comprehension skills. Nonetheless I a still a bit confused as to what it was trying to get across. Reading "Everything Sings" my first thought was about map making, and the art of it all. With the first paragraph talking about an atlas. In my geography class we do a lot of map making, and a lot of learning about how to understand maps in general. I had never before heard the term hog mapping, and target mapping. Both of these readings were a bit difficult for me to focus on. Everyone Sings was a bit more thrilling than the other simply because it talked a lot about cartography and I am now learning all about that.
Week 1, Tech Challenge.
Hi my name is Bre, and I’m also known as Princess Sunshine.
Week 1: Mission
Look a a box holding things. Thanks Bi-Mart. I thought that a simple design like this could be used to hold random art supplies and junk.
Week 1, Readings (Manifesto’s)
the Why Cheap Art? Manifesto
This manifesto intrigued me quite a bit because I find it totally true. Art is something that should be available to everyone, not just the white privileged upper class. Art is something so much more than something hanging on a wall with a price tag next to it. "Art soothes pain!" The exclamation point, and pure energy through out the entire manifesto added a lot of depth and emotion. Art is everywhere, and art is cheap. My friend introduced me to a quote about art saying "Art should disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed." This manifesto reminded me of that quote in the sense that everyone needs art, even if you think you don't. Art is something that is a part of everyone, and every thing. The use of capitalizing certain words, and phrases added a lot of emphasis. Art is defined as the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination. I often have to remind myself that despite the fact that I can't draw very well, I am still in fact an artist. Art is something that is in every little detail in the world. I am an artist in the way that I see things, in the way that I can create a video or take a picture. Art is color, emotion, creativity, expression, and so much more than drawing or painting. Art is not a privilege, but a necessary part of not only our culture, but of our entire worlds culture.
The Creativity Success Manifesto
Step one, "Success is what you make it," reminded me of the stigma that surrounds living the American Dream. That brings up the idea of what exactly the American Dream is. I have always believed that success is something that can only be defined by every individual, and it will never be a definition that can be found in a dictionary. Crackpot ideas are always a start to something, you just have to follow through and keep thinking and creating. This manifesto is one of the best kinds of life advice you can give a person. Failure is only possible if you give up, otherwise success is always present. Time is a concept that we as humans created and humans are the only creatures that follow the concept of time. We are the only creatures that have a fear of time running out. So in step seven, they talk about how the best time to start is twenty years ago. That is such a real statement, because the best time to start is right now. If you come up with an idea then you need to follow through it instead of waiting. Step nine discusses how failure is not a a noble feeling, but in actuality a crappy feeling. I laughed a bit at how they say that motivational speakers make failure sound noble, simply because I plan to become a motivational speaker one day. The Creativity Success Manifesto was a really interesting read, and I agree with mostly all of it. I think the author had a lot to say and they managed to say it with out too may words.
Futurist Manifesto
This manifesto seems like it can be interpreted in many different ways. It is written in a format like a poem, and I find it a little bit difficult to understand exactly what the author was trying to say. Although I assume that was the point of it, to be interpreted differently by each individual who comes across it. With the first part, I think of peacefulness, love and happiness. How life is supposed to be a glorious thing full of sunshine and rainbows. Then step two talks about courage, and boldness. How these things will always be an essential part of who we are people, and how as people we are all extremely different. But we must always be rebellious and stand up for what we believe in. With step three it discusses how literature has always been a 'punching fist' and contemplative stillness. I interpreted this as saying that literature has been boring and dull rather than truthfully showing what life is. Out of all the other manifestos I have looked at so far, this one has been the shortest, but it has also been one of the most complicated for me to understand. I feel as though I should be seeing a very clear meaning behind the words yet I am having a lot of trouble trying to think of what it all could really mean.
Rainer Manifesto
This manifesto is amazing simply because it shows that ideas and notions can change and that it is okay for it all to change. No Manifesto reminds me of a person who is struggling with depression, thus saying no to everything. Even if those things could help them a bit. No Manifesto is all about saying no, and it overall seems very negative. A Manifesto Reconsidered is the middle step to change, when you start to accept the idea of new things. Some things happen, some are good and yes, some will be bad. After No Manifesto is again, another step of change and decision. How things are more clear, and you can open up your mind to see more imagination and courage. I have experienced a change like that myself. Being a very negative person and having to force myself to open up and create a new set of rules for oneself. I have taught myself to say yes to new things, to embrace my flaws and mistakes no matter how many of them I come across. The author of the first two manifestos, Rainer, seem like a much more common thought process among my peers. A lot of people I come across are very negative. But the author for After No Manifest, Andrea Bozic, seems much more positive and over all happier.
Werner Herzog's Manifesto
This manifesto stuck out to me immediately because it is a manifesto for film makers, and I have spent the past six years wanting to become a movie producer. Right from the beginning I agree with what Herzog has to say, always take the initiative. If you never try, then you will never succeed. Being a filmmaker means taking a lot of risks. In my short years of filming I have have had to trespass into a lot of private properties in order to get the shot that I needed, so step two made me giggle. "There is nothing wrong with spending a night in jail if it means getting the shot you need." With filmmaking there are always going to be a lot of mistakes made. You are forced to rely on a lot of other people besides yourself. But there really is no excuse to not finish a film. Filming is one of the most competitive fields out there and you do have to take your fate into your own hands, and be prepared for a lot of rejection. I was rejected to film schools around the country but I refuse to give up. I will continue to make films on my own time. I also laughed at number twenty, "A badge of honor is to fail a film theory class." Last year, my freshman year of college, I did in fact fail a film theory class. I felt rather idiotic at the time, but now I sort of just laugh about it.
