The mandate went into effect earlier this month, July 1st 2016, and it requires all shipping containers to be accompanied by an official document (paper or electronic) signed by the shipper verifying the weight of the container by either one of two official methods shown above.

The purpose of this new mandate is to ensure the container vessel is properly loaded to avoid accidents and loss of containers in the future. While it is an extra step added to an already complex process, it will hopefully prevent losses down the road.
