Larassa Kabel transcended Des Moines and her own work this year. She is best known for uber-realistic drawings and paintings — particularly of horses hit by 18-wheelers — and for being chosen to do a Christmas card for the Obama White House. In the last year, she exhibited a solo show at Stag Park in Chicago, won an Iowa Arts Council Fellowship, a David Hurd Innovator of the Arts Award and a Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation commission for provocative public transit art. Her art has been included in the Italian Domus Magazine’s Mille issue, on the cover of the “Dear Animal” poetry book, as well in Juxtapoz magazine. About 3 months ago in December I bought Veleries' books .

The first one I got was "Wonder" and you know what, she’s too awesome with her shit --can I hug her art? But the real "meat" of my purchase is Veleries (and Annisa F. Yusuf)'s  upcoming comic, Traceless  Knight. Traceless Knights is going to be an ongoing webseries .  Annisa does her job as the writer commendably, teasing readers like me to want to know what's going to happen next, but some of Fabian's narration in the beginning can be cut because of Fabian's facial expression is enough to show what he’s feeling. (Damn you Veleries!!!)  My only quibble is the scene where Fabian casts a spell --I think that moment could have been milked further  for greater emotional effect. Otherwise, Issue Zero of Traceless Knights is really good.

“Field, Road, Cloud: Art and Africa,” at the Des Moines Art Center through April 19, takes its title from the works of Alfredo Jaar, an artist from Chile, one of the whitest nations on earth. That alone challenges politically correct academic criticism that rejects showings of African art in contemporary museums. DMAC director Jeff Fleming begins his introduction to the exhibition’s excellent catalogue with an acknowledgment that “collecting, interpreting and exhibiting works from a culture that a Western curator cannot completely comprehend or grasp fosters concerns about misinterpretation and colonization.” Curator Gilbert Vicario noted that the museum will be subjected to considerable criticism from the politically correct wing of the art world for daring to present a mix of traditional African artifacts and contemporary art from the likes of Jaar.

THIS GUY. UGH THIS GUY.

Max Loh works at a cancer research facility, but in his spare time he sketches and draws fantastic comics. He mostly does diary comics but one of his best work is what he wrote for the 2012 24 Hour Comic Day, “The Road not Taken”.

He is a fantastic artist and writer who (I think) needs to produce more awesome mccool stuffs.

Per Elioli's suggestion, here is a list of inspiring tumblr blogs I love.

1. Kadi Fedoruk (blindsprings.tumblr.com)

I’ve been following Kadi since her days in LJ and I love her artwork because it’s quality and it’s also frickin’ adorable. Her designs whimsical and great and I love her colour choices in her paintings. She also did illustrations of my favourite novel, Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden, which makes me very, very happy .

2. Guys with Pencils/ Adam Hines and Andrew Murray (guyswithpencils.tumblr.com)

Adam and Andrew runs a FANTASTIC podcast, interviewing artists from game, animation and comics. “Technically” not really an art blog but these two work in the industry and they always get great guests to talk about animation, art, cinema, working in the industry, games, comics…which is inspiring because their guests dig deeper than just “going to an art school and getting a job at a big studio.” They interviewed artists currently working in the “biz”, people who gave up the industry, the business side of the industry, industry news, work/life balance in animation/commercial arts, and a lot more. You get perspective and knowledge in SPADES.

3. Katie Shanahan (ktshy.tumblr.com)

Katie works as a board artist in Toronto, she’s HILARIOUS, her comics are really funny, and on top of that she reblogs A LOT of inspiring artwork on her blog which makes following her blog doubly fun. (PS: you guys should also buy her indie comic, Silly Kingdom because it’s so sweet and funny)

4. Tealin (tealin.tumblr.com)

I also have been following Tealin since the LJ days. Her stuff just screams SOLID DRAUGHTSMANSHIP and her stuff are just so alive you can see it leaping off the page and actually moving. Her Herbert West comic is so beautiful and brilliantly adapted from text but the thing that really initially pulled me in was her sketches for the Discworld series.

5. Hwei (lalage.tumblr.com)

She writes and draws a gorgeous a series of indie comics involving a talking white rabbit called Boris and a mute girl named Lalage. Her artwork is this beautiful blend of Chinese painting and Yoshitaka Amano watercolours that I’ve never really seen anywhere else. If you get the chance, buy her comics because she deserves the love.

Others: Max Loh (maxterism@tumblr). He does the sweetest, most sincere comics I’ve ever read this side of Southeast Asia. Daemonyh (daemonysh@deviantart) who still hasn’t gotten herself a Tumblr is great at doing animal designs and should be looked at, asap. Adriana Blake (adrianalikestea@tumblr)--her online comic “Fall on Me” is so cute and she reblogs cool stuff too. Jhosephine Tanuwidjaya (jho-tan@tumblr) WHO ACTUALLY NEEDS TO UPDATE HER TUMBLR, like SOON. Brittney Williams (anotherbrittneywilliams@tumblr) The only person who managed to convince me that Superman comics CAN be compelling and interesting. (which is a big deal because ever since I was a kid, I have never been able to actually relate to Superman—both comics or movies)
