Ok, pt2 😤! But this time, with Briseis and a mini manga with Patroclus! I love bold, colorful graphic styles, but when I’m working on a big digital piece, I end up preferring flat, minimal palettes because it’s more sustainable. But Achilles' part actually was more difficult to colour because blond and light skin basically gives a washed out flat composition so i didn't hold back on colouring him. I also experimented with different media for each character, which might explain the texture differences. Speaking of Briseis, i tried to capture the way you wrote her on the ship/stargazing scene, especially her eyes, and i may or may not leaning her on the "femme fatale gaze" here which kind of contradicts how you portray her??? (Let's just pretend that's how she looks at the traveller hence why's Achilles (+patrcolus?) was territorial)
I think it's safe to say the modern interpretation of patroclus was based on miller's song of achilles? There's nothing wrong with that, before i actually preferred that version bc i thought it represents the whole different kind of strength since he was a medic in that version, but after reading iliad, where patroclus literally killed a warrior by throwing a stone (apollo literally had to intervene) instantly changed my preference lmao. Which made me realise that he's a far more gifted warrior than modern interpretation gives him credit for. He can be gentle, but he’s also undeniably dangerous. which you perfectly portrayed poly! That duality is why I drew him a little softer, almost easy to underestimate. It’s always those who smiles a lot are dangerous and it always makes me think is achilles the dangerous one here? Ok, I'm literally yapping now, thanks for having me, poly!
amazing art and PATROCLUS DISCOURSE ??? omg bestie you feed us wayyy too well TT
yea i could never get into song of achilles purely because of the portrayal of patroclus. i remember reading the description of him having 'knobbly knees' and i was out. i understand why miller made him as a medic but i just couldnt get into that specific portrayal of him.
(do i write patroclus as a lanky anime boy??? yes but im also an idiot so i get a pass)
like even in canonical patroclus was nicer to the women compared to the other greek warriors but like....it wasnt any better. he was still their prison warden by the end of the day. like the only reason we like patroclus is because he is always right next to achilles who says the WORST things imaginable about the mc. patroclus doesnt rlly see the mc as anything but a servant either. granted they both adore the mc buuut they dont see the mc as an equal.
