Artist Research Reflection
Overall, the artist research I completed has helped me better understand how cars can be used as more than just functional objects, but as subjects for exploration, abstraction, and storytelling within art. Looking at artists such as Joe Andoe, John Chamberlain, Gabriel Orozco, and others showed me different ways of approaching cars through painting, sculpture, animation, and conceptual work, whether by simplifying forms, altering structure, or focusing on movement and material. These influences are clearly reflected in my own work, from observational sketches and digital paintings to video and animation, where I explore cars through perspective, process, and reduction rather than strict realism. The research has encouraged me to experiment, document my progress, and think critically about why I make certain visual choices, such as removing details or focusing on POV and motion. Together, this research and my practical work form a cohesive body of exploration that shows my developing interest in cars as visual forms, experiences, and artistic subjects, while also demonstrating my growth and experimentation throughout the first semester.
