Alex Colville 1920 - 2013 The most underrated of Canadian painters, described as a Magic Realist (an offshoot of Surrealism) known to “depict order in a world of chaos”, who paints with an eerie, deadpan stillness in his capture of everyday subject matter. After serving in the army for 2 years he became a war artist during WWII and eventually art professor at Mount Allison University from 1946 to 1963. A self proclaimed entrepreneur, he eventually quit teaching and became a full time painter and print maker at 43. While the rest of the art world was busy wheeling and dealing in minimalists and abstracts this guy stuck to his guns on paintings that I can only imagine took him a forever and a half! His wife Rhoda and muse modelled in several paintings and together they had four children. Today his paintings are ripped off on anywhere from skateboards to homages from film makers the Coen Brothers, Michael Mann, Wes Anderson and Stanley Kubrick. An Order of Canada recipient, he stayed productive until his death at 92. Widely obtained in major collections across Canada and speckled about in Europe but his pièce de résistance, Horse and Train here can be found at the again, underrated and amazing institution that is my hometown, the Art Gallery of Hamilton. You are welcome! 🐎🚂 #alexcolville #agh #underrated #canadianpainter #artbio #artinspiration #filminspiration #painter #entrepreneur https://www.instagram.com/p/CARk2cqgva7/?igshid=mme6y2crgvee
I work a day job and #PAINT with pretty much every other waking moment. I take pride in my work, both as an artist and a community visiting #nurse. I drive around, listen to my favourite music and see people in their homes, at shelters, in community health centers and help people with sticky health problems. Every day is a challenge but I gain perspective, being exposed to situations and people I wouldn’t have otherwise encountered. Experiences I dab into my art. I learn a lot and do a fair amount of good but also it affords me a level of freedom. I can come home and paint whatever I want, I never have to cater to anyone else’s demands, and I can work on it on my own timeline, it takes as long as it takes! It breaks up the lonely studio days also, it’s nice to feel needed. Art and nursing have a very symbiotic relationship for me. The art does pile up though, I sleep in a little room with about 50,000? dollars worth of priceless works of art because that’s how #prolific #painters sleep I guess 😴🌚 #artthoughts #dayjob #artbio #artaslife #mentalhealthday #artistsurvival #torontoartist (at Toronto, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3gK9IjgO-t/?igshid=4g7o4rll4zus

Let's start with Hello :) by Lunar-the-white-wolf My Art bio
Pregnant lady walks into the art store looking for a giant canvas of specific size and a mountain of cardboard for shipping purposes. The cashier at checkout asks, “Are you a student?” “No.” “Are you a teacher?” “No.” “Do you have a studio somewhere?” “Yeah, it’s actually just over there.” Pregnant lady points to the building across the street. “Oh cool!” Cashier stumbles a bit, having to scan the big canvas a couple times. Pregnant lady pays, “l’ll just wait here a bit..” the other associate is still collecting her cardboard. …. 😶😶 “Yeah, my studio is just across the street.. I graduated OCAD over 10 years ago. Not a lot of my friends make art anymore, some have gone on to play in bands, some became art teachers I do have one friend who is a full time artist. I mostly sell online, I’m a nurse too. I just started selling these big ones off a couple of websites.” “Oh how cool,” Other associate returns with the cardboard and cashier gets cut off. Pregnant lady drags her goods out of the store, the nice cashier offers to help her with the door. I’m that person now, the person that shares their life story at the counter 😂 On top of being that regular with bad eyesight who’s always gunning for those teeny tiny paint brushes! Doesn’t feel so long ago when it was me on the other side of some counter. Ah to have youth and be on that brink of endless optimistic possibility again.. I would have been stoked to meet me 😏 #artmoments #artbio #growth #development #artdiary #dreams #life https://www.instagram.com/p/CSIzbcHtDiX/?utm_medium=tumblr
I wrote an art bio for myself for my birthday 🥳 I’ve always loved art bios on how artists came to be and especially when they were of my favourite artists, hopefully I can contribute to the canon. Complete with Lisa Ng myths and heresy, which is fact and which is fiction? You decide. Speckled with Lisa Ng Classics and old timey family photos, this took me a lot longer than I thought it would, enjoy! #lisangart #artbio #artstory #arthistory #artbiography #surrealism #surrealist #popsurrealism #artjournal #artbiography #artistsoninstagram #artstory #painter #painting #fineart #contemporaryart #canadianpainter https://www.instagram.com/p/CP2cA4FNKVw/?utm_medium=tumblr
