Soooo Norman Rockwell was the artist of the week last week at co op. My heart did not jump for him the way it did the week before, but something interesting I read about him was he painted American stories in his pictures. Each picture will tell a story of something beautiful, something sad, something humorous and something peaceful. So we looked at his paintings and the kiddos found these four items in each one we looked at. It was surprisingly fun and their answers were fantastic. I held on to the famous Thanksgiving picture and we talked as much as we could about it. This one clung to me for the date of the painting was 1943... I tried to discribe to the kids how this was the height of WWII and this was a very turbulent time in America... for example, the beauty of the photo were the smiles on everyone's faces, the sadness could have been a family member was missing since he was serving overseas, maybe the humor was the guy at the bottom looked like he was someone had said something funny, and the peaceful part could be that they were together giving thanks! Norman Rockwell was an interesting guy, he was dedicated. And worked hard, he was art educated and never taken seriously by "art professionals" his style was not their style... Rockwell loved this country and the freedoms it stood for. He looks very in a different time but it's still all the same. He saw turbulence and found peace, he saw sadness and found beauty. He gave the people truth in humor and painting...and an uncanny ability to look beyond the outside to reach emotions inside. To hear what people had to say. To experience everyday life! We enjoyed creating stories of his Saturday Evening Post paintings.... lift it up for Rockwell. #artcoop #cc #rockwellhomeschool #nottakenseriously #joeyswickedawesomehomeschoolyearpart2 #peacesadnesshumorandturbulance #lookbeyindtheoutside #silverlining
We did this small art study on a really amazing woman. Anna Mary Robertson Moses.. who later in life became Grandma Moses... I never really gave her or her paintings much thought until it was time to research her and put a small lesson plan together for my co op class... I have to say, me plus research equals... well, the more I dug into this woman's life the more I began to LOVE her and her little paintings. She was an amazing woman and never started painting until she was 76 years old. (There IS hope for me) She lived until she was 101 years old (no thanks) but her paintings were her journey. Her life. She didn't know much beyond the farm. Grew up in a farming family, married a farmer and raised a family on a farm.... in really looking at her sweet paintings, I thought about what life was like for her... The Quilting Bee, The Pumpkin Harvest, Home for Thanksgiving. Maple syrup tapping... this is stuff that is foreign to so many of us. She was part of barn dances and church gatherings, she painted snowfall on the farms and cutting down Christmas trees... explaining all these things to the kiddos, they had no idea what I was talking about... but what a sense of community she was s part of, what a sense of truth and hard work, of trust and life. I'm sure life was not easy but it was different. I think Grandma Moses has snuck into my heart for a few selfish reasons...check her out... you will fall in love with her too... her story is a beautiful one!!! #gmamoses #homeschoolart #joeyswickedawesomehomeschoolyearpart2 #artcoop #quiltingbee #farmlife #cc #ccart #lovethisoldwoman #thereishopeforme #101 #research
