Tuesday, February 13: Artension, “The Day of Judgement”

Future World was ultimately Artension’s final album, though it was generally a continuation of the neo-classical progressive metal sound they helped bring to prominence in the mid ‘90s.  If there was a differentiating factor this time, it was the presence of death metal journeyman Steve DiGiorgio on bass- he didn’t turn the band into Sadus, but he did bring his own style while blending in with the band’s trademark musicianship.  “The Day of Judgement” featured everything that made Artension leaders in their field, from Vitalij Kuprij’s fleet-fingered keyboards to Mike Terrana’s sturdy drumming and John West’s keening vocals.  It was interesting that, after some 8 years, this style of music hadn’t really evolved or changed, but instead of indicating stagnation, that showed that Artension essentially arrived on the scene already fully formed. “The Day of Judgement” was maybe a touch more aggressive, but it was dynamic and still emphasized the band’s musicianship, and was a fine way for the group to go out.

Rrrrrrrroll creates motion pictures of rotating subjects

Rrrrrrrroll creates animated GIFs featuring an anonymous individual in unpretentious everyday life environments. Each stationary image is animated by a movable element in an endless cycle - ranging from a fork full of spaghetti in suspension above a rotating plate to a woman frantically roaming around a streetlight. By barely exaggerating the speed of rotation, Rrrrrrrroll questions us: are our daily routines extraordinarily surrealist or dangerously repetitive. In any case, images still hypnotize us ... and again ... and again ... and again ...

Hong Kong as a backdrop doesn’t disappoint. Robles’ photos take on an especially gritty tone, highlighting the electric buzz of the city. His images are more pulled back than usual, perhaps in homage to just how enamored he came of Hong Kong, with its night markets, vibrant neon signs, and narrow alleys.
