Brew #360: Arthurstown Brewing Co. Hook Grapefruit Pale Ale

Abv: 4.7%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Grapefruit, watermelon

Pour: Opaque amber with a finger of white foam

Taste: Light toffee malt to begin with but swiftly put to bed by the grapefruit wash. Lovely tropical notes floating around with the tart citrusy grapefruit. Ends on a medium dry bite. Some sweetness in the aftertaste. Not the best beer they’ve done but not bad either.

Brew #260: Arthurstown Brewing Co. Kings Bay Maple Ale

ABV: 4.4%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Malt, caramel

Pour: Dark amber, clear with bubbly off white head reducing to a skim

Taste: Sweet sticky malt wash with those maple notes all over and under. Finishes out on a light dry bite, fairly one dimensional, the sweetness isn’t over powering but there’s not enough going on taste wise. Fine for pairing off a dinner course but I wouldn’t be seeking out otherwise.

Brew #252: Arthurstown Brewing Co. Kings Bay Strawberry Lager

ABV: 4.8%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Strawberry, grass, slight malt and honey

Pour: Lightly clouded gold with bubbly white froth reducing

Taste: Really nice bubbly mouthfeel, wheat and malt wash, very light with some citrus notes before a very fine, tart strawberry fruitiness comes in to bite at the finish. Well balanced and refreshing, as recommended on the bottle perfect for a sunny evening with the barbecue on.

Notes: 500ml bottle, Celebration Wexford strawberries, malt - Hook Peninsula Lager malt / Munich, hops - Noble.

Brew #186: Arthurstown Brewing Co. Hook Baltic Porter

ABV: 8%

Served: Off the shelf

Aroma: Rich malt, chocolate, red berries

Pour: Dark brown with a fizzing froth that dissipates

Taste: Deep, dark and rich first wash with some malty sweetness floating around but it’s big, rich, dark fruitiness overall. Gives way to a black coffee kick and a silky mouthfeel finish. Roast nutty bite at the end with christmas pudding fruits on the aftertaste.

Notes: 750ml bottle, malt - Arthurstown Ale Malted Barley/Munich/Chocolate/Crystal/Special W/Roast Barley Biscuit Malt, hops - Northern Brewer/Hallertau Hersbrucker.

Brew #175: Arthurstown Brewing Co. Hook Minch Malt Collab Seaweed & Honey Ale

ABV: 4.4%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Seaside rockpool, seaweed, honeycomb

Pour: Opaque amber with white skim

Taste: Honey mead first, sweet and thick giving way to a very slight saltiness. More honey than seaweed. Nice sharp bite at the end. Very sweet overall with a honeycomb icecream aftertaste. I would have preferred more saltiness and although it’s a sugar bomb flavourwise I thought this was a decent sup.

Notes: 500ml bottle, Minch malt barley, Hookhead Irish moss seaweed, Hook honey.

Brew #172: Arthurstown Brewing Co. 1916 Proclamation Porter

ABV: 5%

Served: Off the shelf

Aroma: Chocolate, toffee, malt

Pour: Cola black with brown bubbly head dissipating

Taste: That bitter chocolate is upfront with some burnt coffee underneath. Also some light sweetness before the finish. A lovely mild porter that goes down easy. I went back for a refill.

Brew #146: Arthurstown Brewing Co. Rum & Oak Aged Porter

ABV: 5.6%

Served: Growler, from the fridge

Aroma: Dark rum, toffee

Pour: Ruby black with a finger of light brown froth disappearing

Taste: Smooth mouth with chocolate upfront and tart rum flavours underneath. Finishes out on a lovely coffee kick with a really nice biting aftertaste, all coffee. A most excellent porter and to have it on tap at the local Supervalu was a surprise and a joy.

Notes: 1 litre growler

Brew #84: Arthurstown Brewing Co. Dunbrody Red

ABV: 4.7%

Served: Off the shelf

Aroma: Sticky sweet malt, faint hoppy pine

Pour: Cloudy tea brown, no head (bottle fizzed up like it had been shaken)

Taste: Full bodied malt upfront passing through to a subtle caramel and biscuit with faint pine notes on the finishing bite. This is lovely red ale, malt forward with a light  brush of hops in the background.
