Romulus appreciated the industry and quiet ferocity of badgers. After all, a wolverine was merely a much angrier version of the same family.
If events had been otherwise, Romulus would have been perfectly content to build himself a home and a life, and defend it on a much smaller scale than he had done in actually. Badgers were quiet, and industrious, and protective.
But humans had been stupid, the world was a mess, and he just... needed to rule it. No one got the frailties of humans quite like Joss Whedon... Romulus wasn't entirely convinced the man wasn't a mutant of a very subtle degree.
Even if he wasn't, Romulus might let him live. The Emperor always needed a Fool to keep him humble.
