Neil Young - Old Laughing Lady (1976) by Julos77 First of all I have a question when I watch this Laughing Lady video. I wonder if a crowd would have formed if there wasn't a large camera crew doing a lot of filming there. If Neil would have just unpacked and started in with some songs would anyone have paid any notice. The song is like so many sung in the familiar melodic motif that is at once recognizable. In order to appreciate the song you really have to give it some time , stop take notice, listen a bit and give it a piece of your day. You got to listen to the story and in a busy place like that you wonder, without the big camera crew if anyone would have taken the time. You can see it in the faces of some of the people in the crowd that seem to be wondering what they are doing there anyway. I mean there they were and they saw all these cameras and a crowd of people and it seemed welcoming enough but what was it about, And then as they simply stand there and take in the words and the story of the song they realize, that is what it is about. I like Neil Young well enough I guess. A lot of his sixties and 70's stuff is outstanding but after the mid 70's his musical gift seems to wear a little thin for me. So it is with renewed respect and appreciation that I watch this film turned video (for my 21st century viewing pleasure), and witness the appearance of a seemingly simple man, busking in a major thoroughfare selling his simple well crafted musical story as only this 70's superstar knows how.
