Speaking of gay characters, big shout-out to you for making gay characters that look like people, not stereotypes. A lot of people (writers, character designers) put the character’s sexuality first and then basically design a lazy caricature, which is, aside from being overused and boring, harmful to actual gay people. Thank you so much for being a conscious of that with your characters, as a gay man myself, I couldn’t be happier to have them as representation!
Thanks so much ! This is one of the most meaningful asks that I received about my art and it brightened my day !
I feel like my characters sexuality can be important, I talk in the books about Vassili being bisexual in the books and sometimes I will draw guys being in love but it's just a part of who they are... If I had to describe him, I would talk about his personality traits and how he's an idiot before saying that he plays for both teams, because it's not the most important thing about it. I wouldn't like his sexual preferences be the first thing that defines him, just like I don't want mine to define me, if that makes sense?
In the book I'm making right now, one of my main characters, Iouri, is a sex-repulsed aro-ace with autistic traits, based on my childhood friend Oliver and, even if the other characters jokes about his sexuality or him being different because they don't understand him, I hope that he will not be understood as ''that ace character'' but as a guy who is nice, and kind, and caring, and an artist, with a very personal grasp on how the world works... because that's who my friend is.
