Two types of young artist

About seven months ago I moved for school and have come to learn that there are two types of young artists. Now I don’t mean different by what they use....more like how they act and treat being an artist.

Disclaimer: Nothing is wrong with being either of these types. It is just an observation I have made from living in a town that is home to a very big art college.

The town where I spent a good portion of my growing up has a lot of artists. In fact that is the only reason the high school art program is able to stay alive and compete against the football programs(go Texas). So being an artist is celebrated but not an OMG kind of deal. I know I can’t speak for everyone, but I think that has a lot do to with the young artists that treat it like just a part of the puzzle that makes up their person. It is the kind of thing where they might go ‘Yeah, I’m an (insert art type here)’ and that is it.

Than there is the other type of young artist. These people have to let everyone know that ‘I AM AN ARTIST’ by finding a way to constantly bring it up in conversations with friends or just the random cashier trying to scan their stuff(me) because they feel the need to have that kind of attention. Everything about them from the way they act to the way they dress lets you know that they are different because ‘I AM AN ARTIST’. Of course nothing is wrong with wanting to stand out and have pride in what you want to do with the rest of your life.

I think that kind of attitude comes from growing up in a place where there aren’t a lot of artists. So someone could see you sketching a stick man taking a poop on lined paper and all of a sudden it is ‘OMG! YOU’RE SO AMAZING! YOU’RE THE NEXT MICHELANGELO!’. So that person grows up feeling like being an artist is their identity and that is the only thing to them. If I had not moved from the tiny, farm town where I was born I would have probably grown to feel that way.

Again, there is nothing wrong with being either of those. Artists, not matter what you consider yourself, need to stick together and support each other because that kind of life is hard. It is just something I’ve noticed and found kind of interesting.
