My Art --- Beneath the Canopy

After countless hours of watching YouTube tutorials and practicing, I finally feel like I've managed to bring a touch of realism into my art.

For the longest time, I struggled with pastel colour palettes and rendering skin. No matter how much I practiced, it never looked the way I imagined. Looking back at my older work, I can definitely see how much I've improved, and this piece feels like a milestone for me.

If you saw my previous post, you probably noticed I was experimenting with Chinese-style anime rendering. This is my second attempt, and I genuinely think I did a much better job this time. I focused on softer skin, natural lighting, and creating that delicate sunlight filtering through leaves.

I'm still learning, but I'm really happy with how this turned out. It's encouraging to finally see the progress after putting so much time into studying and practicing.

I'd love to hear your thoughts! Which version do you think has the best lighting—the first, second, or third? Constructive criticism and feedback are always appreciated.

one year of learning 💛

A year ago I made this bowl and I was genuinely proud of it. It wasn’t perfect, it was a bit clumsy but it was the best I could do at the time, and I loved it.

I didn’t have the skills I have now, but that didn’t matter. I just wanted my Sims to have Easter dishes I grew up with.

This set ended up meaning a lot to me (and to some of you too), so this year I came back to it and gave it a full remaster ! using everything I’ve learned along the way.

Not because the old version was bad, but because I’ve grown.

If you’re just starting with 3D, don’t be afraid of things being imperfect. That’s exactly where it begins 💛

A Pattern Emerges!

This week, more details of the pattern are coming to life! The way the threads weave through the skulls, mushrooms, and leaves has been such an enjoyable process to draw. I feel like this stage really brings out the eerie atmosphere I wanted to capture.

There is a Kofi challenge going on right now so I thought I'd pull this back out and update it. If you are just starting out or feeling bad about your skills, please know it takes time and practice.  It's just like playing a sport, you've got to put in the work and people today have SO many ways to learn and draw than I did when I first started out.

I was born in the late 70's so I was drawing all through the 80's but I don't have access to those earliest drawings. The internet wasn't a thing yet so these dragons are some of the earliest I could find.  As you can see I've come a long way but there's still so much I want to learn how to do and things I want to improve on.

Artist progress from 20160206-20190618.

The first drawing wasn’t posted here, but it was the first Astral Mouse drawing. I decided to draw a little tribute to it.

I have done only a bit of serious learning in 2016 when I bought a few pen and ink drawing books, then I was trying to learn programming and web development. Now I’m back to learning drawing.

Programming/web development/web design doesn’t interest me and besides dealing with learning disabilities I had to force myself to do anything so I have no chance to compete with people who are passionate about that stuff.

I was in it only for money/to be able to make games and it simply isn’t a sufficient motivation.

I draw since I was a kid. I improved a lot drawing from life in advertisement junior college in 2008-2010 despite having incompetent teacher unwilling to teach. I literally had to explain measuring proportions with a pencil to another student on 4th semester because the teacher didn’t bother to.

I drawn literally thousands of drawings, using up tens of sketchbooks during last decade but somehow almost no web pages despite knowing about web design and finishing the first HTML course in 2007. Hell, I even have a computer magazine about web development from 2005. It’s a sign of something, I guess.

So, I decided to take art seriously and improve as much as I can despite not being able to go to art school.
