Tips for artists and managers from the bests.

We Went to Camden Record Club for “Question mark”, a series of panels on various aspects of the music industry.

The meeting titled “Carry on Management” gave us an insight into artist management.

Guest panellist were Kwame Kwaten of ATC Management ( Laura Mvula, Radiohead, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds ), Simon Watson of Sidewinder Management ( The Human League, Belinda Carlise, Fun Lovin' Criminals) and Caroline Prothero (David Guetta).

It was refreshing and assuring to find out that for these professionals their job is still all about music, not about fame.

Here’s what we learned:

For managers:

You can get into artist management in different ways: luck, willingness, accident, but the key is being passionate, and believe 100% in the artist you’re managing or no one else will.

There’s no manual for becoming a good manager, just put as much effort and commitment into it and you’ll find your own way; there’s no job description, it evolves.

Problems are always around the corner; you have to be the person that finds a solution. 

With your artist, you need to work as a team and see who’s best at doing what, helping each other out.

Don’t be afraid to ask, because if you don’t you’ll never learn anything, if you do, you build your knowledge.

They call it business; it’s a business because it makes money, but the way it operates is very different than the other corporate fields.” Caroline Prothero

 For artists:

Gigs haven’t been more important than now for an artist career.

Having a manager doesn’t mean you, the artist, have to sit back and wait for things to happen.

You don’t have to spend hundreds of thousands to succeed; you need to make an impact with your music to make the industry stand up and listen.

Never compromise your vision or personality to succeed.
