Okay so about a week ago I went on a field trip to the Chicago Art Institute (whaaaat) and it was amazing (as always--my second time). But anyway they had a new Chinese/Japanese art exhibit and it was amazing and I learned so many new things!!!
First off, flowers were like super important in Ancient Chinese culture and art. They had schools just for flower arrangements(!). Each arrangement had different meanings depending on the flowers used, etc. The goal was usually to represent harmony. Many ancient paintings include flowers in their paintings to bring deeper meaning.
Also I did not know that Buddhism was so widespread in China and Japan, or so old. I guess I thought it was a more recent religion? (I knew it was old but not that old). There were so many cool statues of Buddhas all carved hundreds of years ago, as well as these crazy cool Shinto idol statues.
I guess the main thing I learned was how little I know about Ancient Asian history. Like I could tell you a million things about Ancient Europe but when it comes to China I’m like, they liked fireworks and noodles? That’s about all I got.
(And I could tell you less about Ancient Africa. Isn’t kinda sad that I know more about the animals that live there than the people? I really want to read up on stuff now so that my [future] students can have a more well-rounded/less white-washed education than I did.)
