Chicago!

In 2009 my closest college friends and I got a house off campus. This became a tenant of our college experience. A home and a family was formed around this (very questionable) house. We have stayed friends to varying degrees of closeness but decided the perfect thing to do was have a 10 year reunion! 

Three of them live in Chicago so we decided it would be a great setting for our reunion. Alex has never been to Chicago so we tried to squeeze some touristy things in there too. 

I have not often taken red-eye flights but having the whole day at home and then landing at 5am means you have the whole day in your destination! There’s no travel day! If you can handle the minimal sleep I think it’s worth it. 

The first day in Chicago we did some errands, took a nap and hung out with friends. For dinner we managed our first quintessential Chicago-ism: Deep Dish Pizza from Giordano’s 

The thing about deep-dish is there is a lot  of cheese and sauce. 

Alex enjoyed her first ever deep-dish but for pizza probably prefers a more traditional style. 

Downtown right now is ArtontheMart. Art on the Mart is an attempt to bring lovely projection art into the heart of  Chicago. Projected onto the Merchandise Mart building you can sit and view the video from across the river. 

It was nice to watch but it wasn’t quite the show we were expecting. You can go to their website to hear the music it’s all set to and the colors and precision of the projection on the building was beautiful. 

Alex and I were expecting something on the level of Singapore with more pizzazz and full sound- just more of a show....

Which this was certainly not. It’s a nice 20min thing if you’re already downtown but I wouldn’t make a special trip. 

However the city lights across the river made a delightful background for a photo shoot. 

We ended the night at  Monk’s Pub for a cheeky drink. It’s a bar that combines a cavernous space with a cozy feel. And delivers delicious food. 

Mostly it was great to see and laugh with old friends again.
