I arrived at the Arts Factory lodge in Byron Bay a few days ago. This hostel was originally opened in the 1970s, and was internationally recognized as a rock and roll venue in the 1980s. Most of the beds here are in teepees and canvas lodges and they’ve also got a large camping area for any caravan travellers. This place is full of diversity and artistic talent and I’ve met more backpackers from all over the world here so far. I’ve also seen a ton of wildlife (that lovely cockatoo, countless water dragons, a python, a number of large bats, all kinds of birds, and even a few possums), and had the chance to tag along on bush walk around the five acre property where I learned all kinds of interesting facts and survival tips about the ecosystem here. The first night I stayed they held an open mic night which drew in some absolutely incredible talent and then the show continued as most of the musicians jammed in the common room until the wee hours of the morning. It was really nice to see that quite a few families are staying here as well with their children. I would DEFINITELY recommend this hostel to anyone travelling through the area as it’s one of the most culturally rich hostels I’ve ever stayed at. It seems to be a hub for some really creative minds :)
