“…paper is the materialised energy of itoshiroshi, that extreme form of purity that is ladled out of chaos and which appears to us both potentially and actually.” Kenya Hara
“Paper is a medium, a document a catalyst, a message, a creative act, it transforms for the better or worse, it travels, it is solid in a semi transparent world, it holds value, it proves, it also us to share information and ideas, it sorts us into groups of accepted and rejected, it covers up temporarily, it can be destroyed easily, it is domestic, it is bureaucracy, it is white, it is empty, it is made in bulk by machines, it is hand-made and it is the material and inspiration for my art practice.” Rebecca Strain
Strain has been using paper as material and subject of her work since 2000. Her practice investigates the creation of the document, the embodiment of paper, the maseration process and the idea of paper as a symbol for potential and a medium for further intervention. She refers to her recent works as Performative Occupations, where use of space and activities relating to making (most specifically the processes associated with paper and making paper) occur for a specific duration. Documentation of this activity is her current interest and she has been exploring methods of documentation specifically the use of camera-less photography.
